Written in ink on two sides of Talbot Readyís personal notepaper folded to make four pages. Folded for mailing; near fine. In this letter to an employee of the Tiffany firm, Talbot Ready responds to a query by George Kunz on the availability of medals of Cellini in small sizes. George Frederick Kunz (1856-1932) was a mineralogist affiliated for many years with Tiffany & Company. His strong association with the arts in America made him a leading authority on the subject. Talbot Ready came from a family of restorers for the British Museum, and he himself worked there in that capacity until 1884, after which he became a coin dealer associated with the firm of Rollin & Feuardent. In this letter, he notes that ìI can find no medal of Cellini which is not much over the size desired by Mr. Kunz.î He uses the back of the note to append a list of seven Cellini medals he had at hand, giving their diameters in each case. ìYou will see by the measurements I append how much too large the medals are for his purpose.î. Ken Rendell was among the more promising young coin dealers of the late 1950s, but he drifted into the field of autographs and historical documents where he remains the foremost American authority. His few coin publications are uniformly scarce and important. This small catalogue includes a number of significant cents.

The report of the state investigation of the first bank failure in the United States. Established in the village of Chepachet 1804, the Farmers' Exchange Bank was in disarray from the beginning. The report finds that "that from the first commencement of the institution it has been conducted, as the perplexed and confused state of the books sufficiently evinces, negligently and unskilfully; and that the Directors had at no time a proper knowledge of the affairs of the Bank. ... It appears to the Committee that the capital stock was not paid in according to the provisions of the Charter." The bank issued paper money in amounts far beyond what it could cover. Its collapse led to widespread insecurity over the use of paper money and general uncertainty regarding the banking system. Rare. Sabin 27585. Shaw & Shoemaker 18510.
