Burgundy endpapers. A lightly handled copy, essentially fine. Dore's illustrated edition was first published in 1871.

A library stamp also to title page and rear pastedown. Light rubbing to boards with some bumping to corners. Four brown splash marks to lower board. Jacket rubbed to joints and edges, with a couple of small chips to head of spine. Very good. A race between certain inhabitants of Venus to gather valuable eggs from the unsuspecting savages of 'Urth,' seemingly in parody of the Colonial explorations of earlier decades.

SIGNED by the author (title page states all copies are to be signed) in black ink to p.1, complete with two folding plates showing a first and second course. Re-backed in the mid twentieth-century in light tan calf, with raised bands, gilt titles to contrasting red and green labels, using contemporary marbled calf boards. Cased using bright cream endpapers. Quite heavily toned to edges and title page; moderately toned throughout. Modern endpapers do not match the original paperstock. Occasional marks and spots; a clean copy overall. Light wear to original boards; corners bumped. Modern spine is perhaps a little bleached, but never matched the colour of the boards.
