Queen needed to learn the identity of a man found murdered in a posh hotel. The scene of the crime bordered on the bizarre, with everything in the room turned backwards, including the victim's clothing, the rug was turned upside down, the picture faced the wall. Everything in the room that was movable had been turned backwards! Bourgeau says "one of the trickiest of the early Queen novels. Ellery deals with a locked-room mystery whose solution lies in what today can only be described as a quaint piece of deduction." An attractive copy of an elusive book.

An important anthology as well as an early one that includes stories by Eberhart, Palmer, Rinehart, Footner, Starrett, Holmes [Boucher], Christie, Orczy, Hume, Bangs, Vickers, Wallace, et al. The introduction is quite informative. Queen says, "the first true detective in literature cracked open his eggshell in 1841, emerging 'fully grown and armed to the teeth.' Fine in lightly rubbed dust jacket with light wear to the spine ends and extremities and the words "Book Club Edition" printed at the bottom of the front flap. There are no book club markings on the book and the dust jacket does not appear to be a marriage between book and jacket, but it well may be the case.

Monte Field was murdered in the Roman Theater shortly before the second act began, but there were several curious facts .... there were seven empty chairs surrounding Monte even though the play was sold out; Monte's top hat was unable to be found; and most importantly, many of Monte's enemies were in the audience at the time of his death. Ellery must solve a crime which could have easily occurred many years ago in the West. He must contend on the one hand with sophisticated New Yorkers, and on the other hand cowboys, cowgirls, bronc-busters, etc. from the West. An attractive copy of this early Queen title.
