Description:
Mimeographed illus. [12] leaves. 12mo (144 x 107 mm.), staple-bound. Amsterdam: Daylight Press, [1976]. A scarce artist's book by Padín (b. 1939), published through Ulises Carrión's roving Daylight Press because of stringent censorship in Uruguay. In this book, Padín, a mail artist and poet, directs his ire not at the military dictatorship controlling his home country, but at the American companies that continued to conduct business with Uruguay, despite sanctions instituted by the United States government. In her examination of this book, Michaëla de Lacaze cogently writes: "After tearing open an envelope, the work's first North American recipients might have been amused to discover yet another mysterious package - the surprise birthday present depicted on the booklet's cover. Festooned with a ludicrously large bow, the gift beckons to be unwrapped, but the only option is to thumb through its text. With every turn of the page, however, the sanguinity of the work's title and first illustration…

Description:
148 engraved plates (several double-page and one double-page & folding). 3 p.l., 15 leaves of explanatory text. 4to, cont. marbled sheep (joints well-repaired), flat spine gilt. London: J. Taylor, 1823. The "Ninth Edition" and a fine copy. The first edition appeared in 1788. Pain "was constantly in print either with a new book - he published eleven between 1758 and 1793 - or with a revised enlarged edition of an earlier one. In America the demand for his books exceeded that of any other eighteenth-century English author... "Intending 'plainly and faithfully to answer the purpose of the manual artificer', he pared his text to essential instructions and wherever possible engraved these on the plates themselves for the convenience of working users. The plates are the raison d'être of his books. They are clear, unpretentious, undeceptive outline representations of whole parts...and of details in a scale large enough to work from."-Harris, pp.…

A fine and beautiful album concerned with various genera of bamboo, how to draw them calligraphically & by painting, the extraction of medicines from them, and how to render & situate the bamboo in a series of complex paintings. Our manuscript, written in Chinese characters but with references to Japanese names of the bamboo, has three titles on the first leaf: "Chikuho higa sho" ["Collection of Secret Methods of Drawing Bamboo"], "Chikuga hiden sho" ["Pictures of Bamboo using a Collection of Secret Methods here passed on"], & "Chikuho hichu sho" ["List of Secret Information about Bamboo"]

Description:
30 fine color paintings & 24 black ink drawings of various parts of the bamboo. 50 leaves. 4to (275 x 206 mm.), modern bright silk brocade wrappers, stitched as issued. [Probably Japan: late Edo]. A beautiful album of finely rendered drawings of bamboo, accompanied by explanatory text. There has been a long tradition in both China, since the eighth century, and Japan of illustrating bamboo, with much thought given to composition and the painting of the stems, knots, branches, and leaves. A number of treatises were written on the subject. This handsomely painted manuscript contains many illustrations, all finely painted or brush-drawn, of bamboo. Following the title, there are two leaves, which are somewhat soiled, illustrating the yin and yang of the three variations of bamboo painting. They include how to place the brush on the drawing surface and how to maneuver the brush and lift it at just the right moment (the calligraphy techniques are named). These are followed two fine calligraphic…

Description:
52 folding leaves. Large 8vo (298 x 190 mm.), orig. patterned semi-stiff wrappers (wrappers a little soiled), old stitching (stitching partially defective). [Korea]: Preface dated 1801, Afterword dated 1816. A very rare edition of this collection of documents relating to seven men and their actions during the Imjin War and the Manchu invasion of Korea in 1636. The invasions of Korea, first by the Japanese in the 1590s and then by the Manchus in the 1620s and 1630s, were important moments in the course of events that led to the rise of the Manchu Qing empire in continental East Asia. The large-scale fighting and movement of troops from Japan and China into the Korean peninsula in the late 16th century mark a watershed in Korean history. The cost of the wars also severely weakened the Chinese Ming dynasty, which eventually collapsed in 1644, ushering in an entirely new balance of power in the region. The "seven worthies" of the title include Pak Kwang-jŏn 朴光前 (1526-97, style name Chuk-ch'ŏn…

Description:
82 folding leaves. Small folio (334 x 220 mm.), orig. wrappers (rubbed & a little soiled), later stitching. [Korea: 1859]. A rare calligraphic copybook, using rubbings of inscriptions carved in stone. The rubbings are from various pieces of famous calligraphy, including those of Injo (1595-1649, r. 1623-49), king of Chosŏn. Various styles of calligraphy are demonstrated. One leaf each is bound-in at the front and back of the book. These leaves contain printed Buddhist texts and appear to be printer's waste, used to protect the main body of the book. Fine copy, preserved in a chitsu. See WorldCat accession numbers 40485550 and 703734781.

19th-cent. russia, sides panelled in gilt & blind, gilt arms in center of the Pelham-Clinton family. Italy, perhaps Tuscany: early 15th century.

A fine manuscript, from the celebrated library of the dukes of Newcastle in Clumber, of this important fourth-century Roman treatise on agriculture. It enjoyed wide popularity in the Middle Ages and early Renaissance, owing to its clear arrangement, with the farming and gardening tasks subdivided according to the twelve months of the year. It "was clearly more useful than that of any of Palladius' predecessors. This fact alone may explain the preservation of his text and its popularity compared with that of Columella."-R.H. Rodgers, "Palladius Rutilius Taurus Aemilianus" in Catalogus Translationum et Commentariorum, Vol. III, pp. 195-99.

Palladius wrote his agricultural treatise with considerable borrowings from his predecessors, mostly Columella, but he consulted other technical writers…

"In the silver age of Greek mathematics Pappus stands out as an accomplished and versatile geometer. Description:
Title printed in red & black. 103 unnumbered leaves, one blank leaf. Small 8vo, modern vellum over boards. [Colophon]: Augsburg: M. Franck for G. Willer, [1568]. First edition of a Paracelsian rarity. Paracelsus' commentaries on the first five of Hippocrates' Aphorisms had been published the previous year in Cologne. The present edition comprises his commentaries on all 25 aphorisms of the first section, and on six of the second. They are followed by treatises on the medical uses of corals and the herbs hypericum (St. John's worts) and persicaria (peachwort). A slightly different version of the section on hypericum was published in the same year by Adam von Bodenstein (Sudhoff 95). In his preface the anonymous editor gives what he calls an impartial discussion of Paracelsian ideas. He points out that Paracelsus' rude and aggressive style of writing and his personal conduct might have been regrettable, but now, 33 years after his death, the controversy should moderate since there…

Black & white illus. throughout. [48] pp. 4to, pictorial softcover with flaps. Poznan, Poland: Krajowa Agencja Wydawnicza, 1986. A very rare catalogue published by the pARTner group to recapitulate their activities in 1984 and '85, some of which involved correspondence art; according to WorldCat, no copies outside of Poland. The collective included Jacek Bukowski, Janusz Byszewski, Blanka Gul-Olszewska, Eugeniusz Józefowski, and Wieslaw Karolak. Many of the projects presented here touched upon art education of children; for example, one entailed the establishment of a reading room. From the introduction: "'pARTner' program clearly determines the need of creativity in human life, it shows possibilities of conveying sublime contents of education for creativity into the language of artistic and paraartistic practice." Most of the texts are in parallel Polish and English. Near fine; a little wear, probably from mailing. With the original mailing envelope neatly folded and laid-in.

Kawase records an extremely rare gozan ban edition printed in 1283 at one of the five temples at Kamakura. These lectures, delivered at the monasteries of Longxingsi and Kaiyuansi by the Chan master Huangbo Xiyun (d. 850), were recorded by Pei Xiu (787?-860), the powerful Tang dynasty minister of state. Pei, a devout Buddhist, was a prominent lay disciple of Huangbo. Pei provided a preface to the lectures, dated 857, and "edited his notes together as the…
