Description:
London: 53 High Holborn, 1780. Engraved plate, 327 x 210mm. (plate size), fine. The mythology of discovery and empire. The full caption title reads: "Britannia seated on an eminence, with a lion at her feet. Neptune introduces Captain Cook, whom she instantly crowns with Laurel. Behind Britannia, History waits to record the New Discoveries". In a curious coincidence of names, the engraver Cornelius Pass 'was barbarously murdered in a fight over an outstanding bill by James Cook, a bookbinder, at Leicester in May 1832' (British Map Engravers p.507).

Description:
Mons: chez Gaspard Migeot, 1740. Spine chipped at base but a very good copy.. Duodecimo, contemporary mottled calf, gilt. Attractive copy of a rare work, with a Belgian imprint, relating the "mysterious voyage" to a "Land of Virtue". First published in Rouen in 1684, this rare spiritual romance is an educational novel written as an allegorical voyage to the imaginary island of 'Virtue' on the River Orontes, the chief Syrian river, and the standard route to Egypt since antiquity. The island proves to be a peaceful religious utopia, presented as a model for the reader. The work is attributed to Palafox y Mendoza (1600-1659), a Spanish bishop and writer, who was a Viceroy in New Spain (in Mexico) in 1642. His attempts to improve conditions for Native Americans led to clashes with the Jesuits and his ultimate excommunication. Attempts to have Palafox y Mendoza beatified were routinely blocked; in fact it was only in March 2010 that Pope Benedict XVI finally approved a… Read more

Description:
London: W. Godbid, 1671. Octavo, with the four page advertisement of the bookseller Moses Pitt at the rear, some of the early pages a little dusted and a few marks throughout; but a very good copy in a recent period-style binding of dark calf, spine decorated and gilt, with russet morocco label. First edition of this important early work on China, now quite rare. The first major news from China to be reported in the Western world was the Manchu conquest of 1644, beginning with Father Martinio Martini's generally accurate De bello tartarico (1654), a work which traced the history of the hostility between the Chinese and the Tartars north of the Great Wall. Palafox y Mendoza, who held bishoprics in both Spain and Mexico, served briefly as the viceroy of New Spain. In addition to his ecclesiastical duties, Palafox was also in charge of the dispatch of vessels to the Philippines during his stay in Mexico. In this capacity he collected "letters and memorials" on events in China as they were… Read more

Vicenza: Jean Rossi, and Modena, 1786. A few plates lightly browned (due to paper type), one plate with a small repaired tear, otherwise in excellent condition.. Three volumes, folio, comprising: "Les Bâtimens et les desseins", four parts (bound in the first two volumes), each with separate decorated title-pages, portrait frontispiece to the first volume and a total of 208 engraved plates, many folding; "Les Thermes", being the third volume of the set, with portrait frontispiece and 25 plates; splendid contemporary uniform quarter calf binding, spines gilt with red and black labels. Description:
London: published by the artist, 1787. A few spots and some rubbing but overall an excellent impression.. Mezzotint three-quarter length portrait, trimmed close to the plate mark; mounted. Rare and impressive mezzotint portrait of one of Cook's great friends and champions. Like Cook a Yorkshireman, Palliser, who became governor of Newfoundland in 1764, encouraged Cook to pursue his charting, and the two men became friends. Palliser later served as Comptroller of the Navy for the decisive years of 1770 through to 1775, where he was active in promoting the second voyage in particular. At his estate Vache, in Buckinghamshire, he erected a monument to Cook after hearing of his death at Hawaii. One of the most important manuscripts to survive from the great explorer, his first voyage log, is known even today as the "Palliser log" on account of its early ownership.

Description:
Adelaide: W.K.Thomas & Co, 1882. Octavo, fine in original maroon cloth with gilt lettering. Good first-hand account of frontier life in the Northern Territory (of what was then South Australia). The author travelled for two and a half months with the South Australian Parliamentary Party, dispatched to assess the current state of the territory. He offers some explanation of the conditions under which the book was written: 'on shipboard when gale-tossings caused cabin furniture to turn somersaults; or - worse than that - in odd corners of some bush public house 'midst sweltering heat and in an atmosphere thick with insect life; the writer enlightened by the feeblest of candles, and entertained by the strongest of strong festive demonstrations from elated patrons of the host...' Despite these challenges, the book is detailed and informative, with chapters on Palmerstone, the country of the deep interior, Government plantations and rich riverine country. Additionally, it contains an… Read more

Notes on the Distribution of Gold Throughout the World, including Australia, California, and Russia (London, 1852; second edition; Ferguson 18922). Description:
London: for R. Ackermann, 1818. Joints slightly rubbed but in generally fine condition.. Imperial octavo, frontispiece and 26 aquatint plates, all handcoloured; nineteenth century purple half calf. In this beautifully illustrated book George Papworth (1775-1847) intended to demonstrate that even a modest cottage could be raised to a high aesthetic plane with the application of the principles of proportion and form. James Broadbent in The Australian Colonial House has traced the influence of Papworth's designs on grander Colonial works: for a palatial house Macarthur was to have built at Pyrmont, as well as some of the features of the prestigious Newington at Silverwater. This is a good copy of the first edition of Papworth's exquisite book on picturesque cottage design. Papworth, leading architect, landscaper and interior designer of his day, popularised the rustic cottages ornés through this work and in Ackermann's Repository of Arts, Literature, Fashions &c.

Description:
Adelaide: W. K. Thomas & Co, 1906. Octavo booklet, 46 pp. very good in original printed pink wrappers, chipped; preserved in splendid full crushed morocco bookform box by Sangorski lined with moiré silk, with gilt lettering. Uncommon booklet in remarkable original condition, describing a journey through the pastoral estates of the west coast of South Australia, with notices of the settlements at Piednippie, Colton, Elliston, Talia, Petina Well, Yandra and Port Lincoln. The author writes in an attractive and offhand style, as might be expected considering that this booklet was reprinted from the Adelaide Register in an effort to bolster public confidence in the potential of the region for future grazing investment. It includes several photo plates, including group portraits of the pioneer selectors, west coast pastoralists in 1888, and local Aboriginals.
