Attractive copy of a rare work, with a Belgian imprint, relating the "mysterious voyage" to a "Land of Virtue". First published in Rouen in 1684, this rare spiritual romance is an educational novel written as an allegorical voyage to the imaginary island of 'Virtue' on the River Orontes, the chief Syrian river, and the standard route to Egypt since antiquity. The island proves to be a peaceful religious utopia, presented as a model for the reader. The work is attributed to Palafox y Mendoza (1600-1659), a Spanish bishop and writer, who was a Viceroy in New Spain (in Mexico) in 1642. His attempts to improve conditions for Native Americans led to clashes with the Jesuits and his ultimate excommunication. The definitive account of the beginnings of French colonisation in Indochina and the conquest of southern Vietnam: Saigon became a French possession as early as 1859. Léopold Auguste Charles Pallu de la Barrière, to give him his full name which he does not use on the title-page here, was a naval officer (eventually a Rear Admiral) who had served in the Crimean War, and subsequently in the 1860 expedition to China. He was governor of New Caledonia in the early 1880s. .

London: for R. Ackermann, 1818. Joints slightly rubbed but in generally fine condition.. Imperial octavo, frontispiece and 26 aquatint plates, all handcoloured; nineteenth century purple half calf. In this beautifully illustrated book George Papworth (1775-1847) intended to demonstrate that even a modest cottage could be raised to a high aesthetic plane with the application of the principles of proportion and form. James Broadbent in The Australian Colonial House has traced the influence of Papworth's designs on grander Colonial works: for a palatial house Macarthur was to have built at Pyrmont, as well as some of the features of the prestigious Newington at Silverwater. This is a good copy of the first edition of Papworth's exquisite book on picturesque cottage design. Papworth, leading architect, landscaper and interior designer of his day, popularised the rustic cottages ornés through this work and in Ackermann's Repository of Arts, Literature, Fashions &c. .

Sydney: Government printer, 23 November, 1887. Single foolscap sheet, slightly foxed. This notice prints a dispatch from detective Jules P. Rochaix to the Sydney Inspector General of Police, reporting the imminent retrenchment of 200 Chinese miners from the Nickel Company of New Caledonia, and fears that they will come to New South Wales. This appears to be quarantine issue rather than a criminal one, in that 'It is these Chinese that the introduction of the fever 'dengue' in New Caledonia is attributed.' .

This lithograph of an Australian plant is taken from Joseph Paxton's Magazine of Botany and Register of Flowering Plants. Paxton's note on the plant commented that it 'is a very distinct species of stypandra... raised from New Holland seeds in the year 1836, and although not particularly showy, possesses a considerable degree of elegance... The genus stypandra is exclusively of New Holland, and contains about six species with the one now described...'. .

Contained in its original custom-made book form box, and including two geographical reference works - one arranged alphabetically and the other by region. The third volume is a general biographical dictionary from ancient to contemporary times. The two geographical references, which were intended as companion volumes, are of particular interest for what they show of the dissemination of information about discoveries in the Pacific to the general reading public. First edition of this antiquarian utopia set in Minoan Crete, chronicling the reconciliation of all strata of society. The success of this novel by the Professeur d'éloquence at the Royal College at la Flèche led to several editions within a few years. Like so many books of the imaginary voyage tradition, this work takes Fénélon's Télémaque as its template, and has a similarly socialist distrust of private property and the evils of slavery. .

Thomas Pennant born in 1726, he was a prominent ornithologist and zoologist and prolific author of the eighteenth century. His writings about natural history, topography and travel were based on his many tours of the British Isles and research into the world's animal kingdom. It was said that his writings achieved great success by always making dull scientific matters interesting. His circle of friends included Sir Joseph Banks and Captain James Cook, in 1771 he visited Banks shortly after he returned from his voyage around the world with Cook. It was at this time that Pennant came into possession of some of the specimens that Banks had bought back from the voyage and would later write about.
