Also known as Marion Glean, Marion O'Callaghan, and Marion Glean O'Callaghan, this is the author's second and last novel after Pan Beat was published in 1973. Former copy of literary critic and translator Robert[o] Marquez. Marion Patrick Jones was born in Trinidad and after attending an all-girls Convent in Port of Spain was admitted to St. Mary's College, now the St. Augustine section of the University of the West Indies. Then pursued graduate studies in London, 1959, where she was founding member of CARD (Campaign Against Racial Discrimination). 'J'Ouvert Morning explores the lives of the tormented Grant family in Woodbrook, a fusty suburb of Port of Spain...all of them seek refuge in failure...seek refuge in ultimately unrewarding shelters---drink and maudlin, unfulfilling religion for one,…

Description:
Cambridge, Massachussetts and London, England: Harvard University Press, 1982. Hardcover [octavo] in pictorial dust jacket. [viii] 511 pp. Charcoal cloth with silver stamped lettering to spine. Near Fine in a Very Good jacket, unclipped, lightly rubbed and soiled, with shallow edgewear including some small tears and creases.. A foundational text for the Afropessimism movement, this landmark study by Patterson--through a close study of over sixty slave societies--established and explored the "social death" of the enslaved people, as perpetrated and accelerated by the parasitic nature of the "Master". Hugely influential towards the thought of Frank Wilderson III, whose work and writings towards Afropessimism constitute a chamber in which Patterson's work constantly reverberates.
