Volume I only of the 3rd edition of John Oldmixon's most important work. The 3rd edition includes 'An Essay on Criticism' at the end of the book with separate pagination from the main text. Half title and title pages followed by xi, 309pp + xxii index pp + [4] advts. + 94 pp.
Octavo, rebacked in brown full calf binding with original reversed calf boards, spine with five raised bands and red spine label with gilt lettering. Signed by a William Porter of Ely on the inside of the front board. Binding in good condition, boards show edgewear, with some creases and small stains. Internally good, pages lightly tanned with some small wormholes and stains throughout the text.
John Oldmixon was an English Whig historian and pamphleteer from Somerset. Originally a composer of poetry and dramas, he later gained notoriety in his day for publishing his scathing views on how the history of England had been recorded by those before him, especially by Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon.
