Description:
Tokyo.: Kanjyoshisha, Hakujitsusha Publishing Division., 1917.. Original publisher's beige paper-covered boards with printed title to spine and vignette to front board, matching endpapers and original dust-jacket with colour design by Tanaka Kyokichi to front panel, printed title to spine.. 8vo. (200 x 140 mm).. Frontispiece and 3 woodblock print illustrations by Onchi Koshiro, 11 plates by Tanaka Kyoichi. First edition, limited to 500 copies, in the rare dust-jacket. Sakutaro Hagiwara is considered by many critics to be the father of modern Japanese poetry. He was among the first poets to break away from the traditional, strictly metered forms of Japanese poetry as practiced in the writing of tanka and haiku. He also established a new aesthetic in Japanese poetry in which he attained a sustained poetic lyricism by using colloquial Japanese speech in free-verse poems. In 1916 he co-founded the magazine Kanjo (Sentiment) with Muro Saisei, an author whose poems he greatly admired. The magazine… Read More

Description:
Tokyo.: Aoi-shobo., 1937.. Original wrappers.. 4to. (29.7 x 21.7 cm).. With 6 illustrations by Onchi Koshiro. Limited to 200 numbered copies, signed by the author beside his photograph reproduced on the opening page. Kitasono Katue (1902-1978) was one of the most important Japanese Avant Garde poets of the 20th Century. Due to circumstances ranging from language barriers and lack of translators to stereotypes to misfortunes in publication, his work is not widely known outside Japan. Ezra Pound considered him one of the great poets of the century, and the two corresponded and influenced each other for decades. Kitasono was editor-in-chief of the renowned Tokyo avant-garde poetry magazine Vou, which continued, with occasional suspension, until Kitasono's death in June 1978. 'Natsu no Tegami' was designed with surrealist illustrations by Onchi Koshiro (1891-1955), one of the first abstract painters in Japan, and a leader of the Sosaku Hanga (New-style prints) movement. He produced single sheet prints… Read More

Circular vignette printed 24 times across and down the page (6 x 4) with surrounding text, each vignette also with printed text. An excellent example of the scarce poster / announcement / programme by George Macunias for the fluxorchestra's September 25th, 1965 recital. The programme, designed by Maciunas and making use of the 'Mask' vignette he had used previously for the fluxshop / fluxorchestra manifesto, included works by La Monte Young ('1965 $50'), Yoko Ono's 'Sky piece to Jesus Christ' and '4 pieces for orchestra to La Monte Young', pieces by George Brecht, Chieko Shomi, Shigeko Kubota, Ben Vautier, Tony Cox, Robert Watts, and others. The fluxorchestra, costumed by Robert Watts (also on tuba), featured La Monte Young as conductor, Ayo on trumpet, a string section featuring Tony Cox and Yoko Ono, Jonas Mekas on accordion, 'Samurai Sword' as a special guest (presumably playing on Tony Cox's 'Sword… Read More

Nice.: Marcel Alocco., 1967 – 1968.. Original publisher's printed wrappers, stapled as issued, titles and illustration in black to front covers, advertisments and publication details to rear.. 3 vols. 8vo. (230 x 162 mm + 242 x 158 mm).. Printed text in French and English with some monochrome illustration (see below). A fine complete set of this scarce and short-lived Niçoise art review. With contributions, in the first issue, from George Brecht, Jacques Lepage, Ben Vautier, Henri Chopin, Emmet Williams and a review of Daniel Spoerri's 'Topographie Anecdotée de la Chance' by the editor Marcel Alocco, 'Open' declares itself very much of the south of France. Advertisements include those for 'La Cédille Qui Sourit', the artist-run shop, or rather 'non-shop' - the raison-d'etre was to eschew typical commercial activities - of Brecht and Filliou in Villefranche-sur-Mer, the gallery of Jacques Matarasso and the Galerie de la Salle. Issue 2 from May '67 features contributions by Giuseppe Chiari,… Read More
