Boards have some shelfwear to edges and hinges, and minor bumping at the corners; there is some very minor separation at the top of the front hinges at the back corners of vol I. There is minor scarring on the back panel of vol II. The boards of vol II has some very slight curvature. The text blocks are both in tidy condition. Internally, there is foxing to the inner endpapers and to title page and frontispiece of each vol. The tissue guard for the frontispiece of vol I is missing. A previous owner's bookplate is tipped in to the front endpaper of vol I, and the inside front cover of vol II. The text pages are clean and bright. The bindings are tight. There are no markings or inscriptions.

Rupert Hart-Davis, London; first edition, 1956. The boards, in green cloth, have rubbing and light edgewear. The top edge of the text block has been discoloured slightly by dust. Internally, the book is clean and bright and tightly bound. There are no markings or inscriptions. The jacket has spotting to front and back and minor edgewear at both ends of spine. The front cover has been sunned along the top and righthand edges (there is also sunning to the extremely lefthand edge of the back cover, and the edges of both flaps). There is a tear about an inch long at top right of front cover that has been taped. Jacket is in protective wrapper.
