The fifth publication from Necronomicon Press, being a reprint of an edition of 50 numbered and signed, which I believe were sold at the First World Fantasy Convention in 1976. THE CONSERVATIVE was Lovecraft's own amateur paper. The value of THE CONSERVATIVE to the HPL enthusiast is best summed up by his friend Mr. Frank Belknap Long, who wrote the foreword to this volume, "The HPL I met and talked with at length on his first visit to New York was an infinitely more mellow HPL than the young man of 25 who could write: "Outside the domain of pure literatureTHE CONSERVATIVE will ever be found an enthusiastic champion of total abstinence, and the domination of the English and Kindred races over the lesser divisions of mankind." Numerous good but small photos of HPL and pother Weird Tales writers, Robert E. Howard-looking older than his thirty years with his infamous mustache, Clark Ashton Smith, Henry S. Whitehead, Donald Wandrei, Frank Belknap Long, Henry Kuttner, E. Hoffman Price and too many others to note; in addition to the outstanding dust-jacket illustration by Virgil Finlay. [2035 copies printed]. Very, very light dusting to page top-edges, barely noticible moisture dulling to lower-edge of front panelsee scan few finger-prints to cloth; d.j. has some very light chips and a 1/4 closed split at spine, some toning to d.j., spine, all evidenced in scan. A very good copy in v.g., d.j. Nice spring in the hinge.

[N.p., but located in Hampshire, UK]: Spectre Press, [1976]. [First Printing]. This early Jim Pitts portfolio features six drawings based upon the fictional works & locales, of H.P. Lovecraft: The Outsider, The Terrible Old Man, Night Gaunts, The Call of Cthulhu, Innsmouth, and the Music of Erich Zann.Heavily influenced by Hannes Bok, and Virgil Finlay, but the artist's stipple is broader than the fine Finlay technique, giving the drawings a more sinister feel, but there's a bit of Hannes Bok "cheekiness" in the poses, suggesting that we're really not to take these horrors too seriously. The Portfolio is Signed by the artist. There is a booklet included with Lovecraft's likenessnicely done, deeply shadowedon the cover, and a Dirk Mosig article on HPL, along with Jim Pitts's biography. Slick paper, heavier stock, in a stiff illustrated manilla folder. A little bump to lower R.H., corner, else fine. Very, very nicely done. I, myself, am a big fan of Pitts's work.
