Paris: Hachette et Cie, 1905. Attractively bound by Isabella van Haersholte in full crushed olive green morocco with four matching leaf and blossom designs around stylized hearts in gilt ruling, each corner having four onlaid blossoms in beige, design repeated on rear cover, spine with geometric ruling in gilt on panels. Superb wide dentelles with four concentric gilt-ruled lines. AEG. A total of 32 separate blossom morocco onlays on both covers. Monogrammed "IvH 1906," in gilt pallet on rear dentelle, i.e., Isabella van Haersholte. This is van Haersholte's own copy, with her attractive decorative bookplate on front pastedown. Binding somewhat rubbed, near fine. Little is known about this accomplished binder, but her work appears to of some moment.

London: David Stott, 1889. 12mo. Two Volumes. Attractive Arts & Crafts style binding by Miss Florence Leicester (inscribed in pencil at back of volume 1, "bound by Miss Florence Leicester) and signed in gilt pallet on rear dentelle: "19- F-M-L- 02, in crushed tan morocco with shamrock and petal design, flowers and vines on both covers (i.e. repeated four times), gilt-ruled dentelles and spines with similar motif. Large paper edition; one of one hundred copies [unnumbered]. White endpapers with ruled dentelles, featuring shamrocks in each corner. All edges gilt. With the bookplate of Alonzo Weston Kimball, noted collector of rare books and fine art. Little is known about Florence Leicester, except to say that she was very accomplished and no doubt studied under one of the major bookbinders in London at the turn of the century. Some light rubbing and spine slightly faded. Very small closed crack to the top of the front hinge on vol. II. Only 100 Copies Printed. Both volumes and contents near fine.

London: M. J. Godwin, at the Juvenile Library, 1811. 12mo, [xii], 176, 4pp. (advertisements), original publisher's boards, uncut edges (unusual), without the 2 plates (this is not a defect, since not called for- see below). A very scarce and desirable tile by Charles Lamb, which was published by Godwin in 1811, but was not re-issued, as this volume (which may be considered a second edition of that excessively rare item) took its place. In books published by Godwin in 1812, there occurs an advertisement for Poetry for Children which is headed "Out of Print, but the best Pieces inserted in "Mylius, First Book of Poetry." Extensive notes by early owner in pen, and another in pencil detail the edition..."Since the title-page notes that the volume is sold bound in sheep with two engravings, this uncut version which lacks the engravings should not be regarded as defective since, they are not 'called for." London: J. M. Dent & Co, 1903. Attractively bound in full light brown crushed morocco by "VAB," signed on rear turn-in, "19 * VAB * 06. Covers feature matching gilt ruled borders with four square panels at each corner impressed with a dark brown background consisting of strap-work and Tudor rose. Spine with four similar design motifs. Very wide turn-ins with four gilt filet ruling and two corner designs impressed in dark brown on each turn-in. With portraits and other illustrations. TEG, others uncut. Fine.

[London]: [Thos. Hodgkins], 1805. 16mo. (11.7 x 9.4 cm, leaves) 16 pp. Three-quarter 19th Century calf with attractive marbled paper with gilt decorative ruling, title and date gilt-lettered on spine. Printed on facing versos and rectos, with 15 exquisite and colorful hand-colored engravings (including title vignette). Considered to be Lamb's first book for children and one of the earliest published by William Godwin, who used Thomas Hodgkins as his agent. The poem is one of the rarest children's books of this period, seldom turning up in the marketplace. See Osborne p.100. Edges close-trimmed with some loss to headlines and to final lines of text (including loss of imprint), closed tear at gutter of last 4 leaves repaired with archival tape, [B3] with lower outer corner torn away resulting in loss of text (1.8 x 5 cm at largest point), second and third leaves bound out of order, lacking original wrappers.

A collection of 15 ALS from R. J. Lane, (1800-1872), prolific English Victorian engraver and lithographer (The National Portrait Gallery has over 800 lithographs of his works. To William Smith, 1872 "I confined my appeal to the small plage, "Combat," after Etty it seems that the glass having broken is the only hindrance." To Colnaghie, 1835, "No one would do it so well as Haghe, except Mr. Harding... etc" To Dawson Turner, concerning his portrait of Mrs. Dawson Turner and providing the writing to accompany it.." etc. 1862, "Dear friend, ... to what extremes are you running! Dont you see that we- the Drones, by comparison- ought rather to feed and glorify you? But it is a queer world..." etc. 22 total pages of writing. Scarce collection.

Exquisitely bound (unsigned) in full maroon morocco, likely by the Hampstead Bindery, based on similar patterning, tooling and craftsmanship. An elegant rendering, with very precise tooling work involving a complicated and aesthetically pleasing waving and geometric mix, vines and blossoms, and copious stippling and nailheads on both covers. Spine with five raised bands and six panels, five of which are intricately tooled, the second has the title, and the date is at the bottom. Stunning wide dentelles with very elaborate gilt stamped repeating design motif, and with a central panel of fine geen silk moire, repeated on the fly leaves. Side edges of the binding with gilt stippling closely spaced on all three sides. Top edges gilt. The Large Paper Copy for this title is very scarce. Fine condition. A most desirable and attractive binding.

Beautifully bound by Riviere (with their gilt pallet on front dentelle) in rich red-brown crushed morocco with elaborated and delicately aesthetic gilt tooling to spine on four of the six panels consisting of stylized blossoms on long stem with surrounding stippling, the same motif design occurs on the corners of the two dentelles, marbled endsheets. Outer edges with gilt fillet ruled lines. AEG. Limited Edition of 100 Copies Only on fine Whatman paper, this No. 12, so inscribed, and signed by the publisher, D. Nutt on the Limitation Page. Originally published in 1887, Nutt reprised the title due to its popularity, adding in the Publisher's Note regarding the re-issue: "is not intended in any way to compete with the original edition, is issued in response to many and repeated demands..." In fine condition.

Original publishers olive green pebbled full morocco binding with bold gilt strap-work design borders on both covers, gilt lettering on spine. Half-title, tissue guards (inlcl.frontis.), and errata slip at end, all present. 15 finely hand-colored aquatint plates by J.T.Rawlins heightened with gum arabic. The first treatise devoted primarily pheasant rearing and the management and preservation of woodlands. Light foxing to tissue guards and some text leaves, plates generally clean and bright. Superb original printed color lithographed poster by Herbert Myron Lawrence for the October, 1895 Century Magazine, depicting a stylized sailboat in blue with a setting sun. Herbert Lawrence, (1861-1937), who established an art studio in San Francisco in the 1880's, and, at the turn of the century, was known for his innovative frescos and revolutionary colors in theaters and public libraries. Sight size, 17 3/4" x 10 5/8", Frame 25" x 19 1/4." Signed with initials "HL" Lower left. Provenance from the Ainsworth Gallery, Boston. From the property of the Boston Company, Inc., Asset Management. Very good condition with wrinkles to paper in upper corners, in archival frame and mat.

London: Privately Printed for Le Gallienne by Elkin & Mathews, 1893. First edition. First edition. Original card laid paper wrappers. The Kettaneh Copy, printed on Japan Vellum. According to publisher's remarks, and documented in Colbeck, the edition on Japan Vellum was limited "to only a few copies," though Nelson in his Elkin & Mathews bibliography, cites 50 copies were printed. This is the only copy we have seen in Japan Vellum. Fine.

Original publisher's green cloth with celebrated Cover and spine design by Will Bradley, featuring an all-over repeating motif of the face of a woman with stylized hair as a design element. A later printing [1896 was first], notwithstanding, probably the finest copy we have ever seen of this iconic cover, with both hinges intact, the contents perfectly clean and bright, and virtually no signs of wear to the covers.

Association Copy: Inscribed by the famous San Francisco publisher to Dewitt Miller, acclaimed educator, journalist and book collector: (on front free fly) "To Mr. Dewitt Miller from Wm. Doxey San Francisco, July 8, 1899." As well, Miller has signed the book in four lines on the rear pastedown. An excellent copy of this scarce first trade title for Elkin Mathews, and the first to bear the "Bodley Head," imprint. Near fine with corner wear and usual 'point' browning due to acidic nature of paper.

Lacks front free fly, but an amazing survival with dust wrapper, almost never seen, and thus preserving book, which is in fine condition. Rarely seen thus.

Bound in full light brown Morocco with a wonderful, visible grain highlighted by a grading to darker brown in areas giving a stunningly attractive appearance. Both covers feature a highly ornate gilt-tooled stem and blossom pattern which extends from the spine outward, with similar detailing on spine. Exquisite full dark green crushed Morocco doublures with attractive gilt design, and tooled at the bottom of the front dentelle, ìBound for Bertha C. Hubbard, MCM).î The book is expertly hand-illumined by William B. Faville (prominent Roycroft artist) with wide, colorful border designs and initials, as well drawings and watercolor illustrations. #6 of only 10 Copies on Japan Vellum, numbered and signed by W.B. Superb color cover illustration of three men in armor in highlighted silver and red-brown. With original 1897 announcement bound-in at front reproducing cover image. Illustrated throughout with full-page, large and small drawings, decorative borders, and initials by Heinrich Lefler and Josef Urban. Book has been professionally re-cased preserving cover image, otherwise the book is in fine condition with all the pages clean, bright and unmarked. The earliest significant co-production of the famed Jugendstil duo, Lefler and Urban who went on to co-produce Kling Klang Gloria in 1907 and other books. Extremely rare in any condition, our copy is sure to please.

Huge thick folio size weighing 25 lbs, 418pp, (18 x15 x 4 inches) In original publisher's full mottled green cloth with central imbedded panel which has a bold gilt stamped design of a cathedral. This immense volume of German history and remembrances is illustrated with monumental full-page color illustrations by (among others) HEINRICH LEFLER AND JOSEPH URBAN, who also designed the borders in red-orange which are present on nearly every page of the book. Printed on thick card paper with superb full-page tissue-guarded and captioned steel engravings throughout. Corners slightly rubbed, a little wear to calf. A COMPLETELY FINE AND ALTOGETHER IMMACULATE COPY. Represents an historical high-point on many levels, German book production, art, history, Jugendstil decoration. If not now, this book will become one of the great classics of the period. Book weighs over 7 lbs, so allow for postage!
