Bound in brick cloth with titles and decorations stamped in gilt and rules stamped in black. Copyright 1887; title page dated 1888. No additional printings. 224 pages. Decorated endpapers. With an engraving of the author as a frontispiece, which has 1.5" tear at the gutter. Inscribed and signed by the author on the second blank, with a later gift inscription from the wife of the original recipient to another party; neither are dated, but Langeland died in February, 1888, just weeks after this book was issued, so a very early authorial inscription. The cloth shows mild edgewear, with no frays or tears. Paper toning, as usual for Anderson's productions from this date, but the paper is not brittle or chipped. Decorah: Lutheran Publishing House, 1905. First Edition. . Hardcover. Photographic Reproductions and Fold-out Map. The author was the daughter of the 1st president of Luther College and grew up in Decatur Iowa with Norwegian as her 1st language. In 1897, at age 24, she traveled with her aunt and uncle to join her sister in South Africa at the Zulu Mission Station at Entumeni. She was there 3 years and her primary interest in the Zulu was their domestic life. This book, originally published in Norwegian in 1905 in Decorah, was later published in English. The book is bound in blue cloth with gilt cover and spine lettering. The cover shows rubbing and soil. The hinges are tight. Bookplate of prior owner Herman Gimmestad on inside of the front cover. Front free endpaper has signature of prior owner H.O. Sweby in Viraqua, Wisconsion. There is occasional foxing to the pages and some finger smudging to margins. Occasional pencil check mark in margins. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall

Bound in three-quarter polished calf and marbled boards; spine in five compartments, with titles and decorations stamped in gilt. No additional printings. 223 pages. This appears to be a rebind from the latter part of the 19th century, with the former owner's name at the heel of the spine. Hans E. Woll, the former owner, also placed his small stamp to the half-title and his signature on the title page; also present is the bookplate of Norwegian-American collector Herman Gimmestad on the front pastedown. Boards and leather edgeworn and rubbed, but the joints remain uncracked and the hinges are solid. There is mild shelf slant. All contents clean and tight, with no toning or foxing. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall
