First edition of the author's second novel, a story of a Chinese immigrant who lives in San Francisco's Chinatown in the early 1900s and experiences the 1906 earthquake. LaPiere taught sociology at Stanford; through a Rockefeller grant, he studied San Francisco's Chinatown, with which he developed an affectionate understanding.The dust jacket illustration by George Annano is exquisite, capturing Chinese emigres amid San Francisco's bustling waterfront. Reprint of the 1913 first edition. Henriette-Lucie Dillon was a witness to history: at court in the Ancien Régime; marriage to the Comte de Gouvernet; the revolution; exile in upstate New York, and return to France under Napoleon's Empire. She wrote this chronicle in letters to her son.

The press was founded by William and Victoria Dailey in 1973. One copy is recorded by OCLC, in the Patrick Reagh papers at the Clark Memorial Library, UCLA. A bright, fresh copy. Scarce.
