Description:
Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black, 1878. 4 vols., 4to, pp. [iii]-viii, 216; [ii], 217-445, [1]; [iii]-viii, 276; [ii], 277-504 + 362 plates. Contemporary half green morocco, green pebbled cloth boards, spines divided by raised bands between double gilt rules, 2nd and 4th compartments lettered direct in gilt, other compartments tooled centrally in gilt, top edges gilt. Title-page of vol. 1 somewhat worn from adhesion touching a few letters, else just a touch of scattered foxing. A little rubbing to edges, some marking to boards. A scarce reissue in 4 volumes with new title-pages of the third edition of this collection of Kay’s works, published in 2 volumes the previous year. The third edition was the last use of the original copper plates, which were touched up for this edition and destroyed afterward, so this edition must have been to use up surplus sheets, and probably in small numbers. We have only traced a single copy of it on Worldcat, at the Frick Museum in New York, as against 58… Read More

Description:
Edinburgh: Printed by James Ballantyne and Co., 1817. FIRST EDITION, 4to, pp. [ii], xlix, [i], 484 + frontispiece and 2 other plates, two illustrations within the text. Contemporary quarter red cloth, grey boards, printed paper label to spine. Scattered toning and foxing, a little soiled, some offsetting from plates. Boards a little grubby, some wear to extremities, small area of damage to top of front board, endpapers renewed. James Kirkton (d. 1699) completed this history several years before his death, ‘apparently in reaction to Scotch Presbyterian Eloquence’ (ODNB), a satirical tract which had attacked him primarily. The history circulated in manuscript throughout the eighteenth century; this is its first appearance in print.

London: Printed for A. Constable & Co. , 1821. 12mo, pp. xvi, 464. Near contemporary black calf, spine divided by raised bands with double gilt rules, red morocco labels, other compartments tooled in gilt, boards bordered with blind rolls, marbled edges and endpapers. Some toning, dampmarks to blank corners of first gathering. A little rubbed to extremities, boards slightly marked. Binder’s ticket of Farie in Glasgow to front pastedown. First published in 1817 as ‘Apicius Redivivus’, in this third edition Kitchiner states that the book is ‘almost entirely re-written, -- He has not printed one Receipt-- that has not been proved in His own Kitchen’ (p. xiii). The text was popular, much-reprinted, and influential - especially on Mrs Beeton. The introduction contains a 3-page list of cookery books published between 1513 and 1814 reportedly consulted by the author (’my tedious progress through these books - many of which did not afford… Read More

Description:
London: Printed for A. Constable & Co., 1823. 12mo, pp. xx, 484. Untrimmed in original blue paper boards backed in grey paper, printed paper label to spine. Some light spotting, a few small stains. Worn, joints cracking but sound (and touched up in a few places with glue), one corner of lower board torn away. First published in 1817 as ‘Apicius Redivivus’, this fifth edition is again revised by the author though this time he found ‘little to add, and little to alter’ (p. xvii). The text was popular, much-reprinted, and influential - especially on Mrs Beeton. The introduction contains a 3-page list of cookery books published between 1513 and 1814 reportedly consulted by the author (’my tedious progress through these books - many of which did not afford the germ of a single idea’, p. 21).

Some light soiling. A treatise by the successful expatriate Scots bookseller John Knox (1720-1790) 'which argued—understandably—that transport links in the highlands had to be improved, and advocated the construction of what became the Crinan and Caledonian canals' (ODNB). Description:
London: Printed for J. Mawman [et al], 1803. 3 vols., 12mo, pp. [xii], 314; [viii], 316; [iv], 320. Contemporary quarter speckled calf, marbled boards, vellum corners, spines divided by gilt rolls, green and black morocco labels, other compartments tooled centrally in gilt. Some foxing and spotting. Rather rubbed and somewhat worn, particularly to spines, labels a little chipped. Kirkleatham crest stencilled to pastedowns. The essays of schoolmaster Vicesimus Knox (1752-1821) were first published in 1778 on the recommendation of Samuel Johnson and were much reprinted and augmented in the years following, so that the original 38 essays had become 177 by the time of this 15th edition. ‘In these later editions Knox addressed an increasingly diverse range of subjects, among them gardening, household management, the work of Bede, the usefulness of capital letters in correspondence, and the unacceptability of masculine dress for women.’ (ODNB)
