This 2d edition, translated from the German by Willa and Edwin Muir, purports to include new omitted passages that Kafka had left unfinished or struck through as questionable. This edition thus claims to be "definitive". Markings on cover, including a rather quaint typewritten complaint that the book is -too hard- for 12th grade. True enough. The bored 12th grader has also colored in the title on title page and the author's name but does not appear to have turned, underlined, marked, creased, or otherwise engaged the rest of the volume. Thus, very good condition for the text itself. One crease in spine. Spine is flat and straight. 340 pages.

As New, with no markings, creases, or tears. DJ has a crease at the top of the back cover, hence Fine rather than As New. Not price clipped, not ex lib, not remaindered. Good cloth first edition with silver lettering on spine and black lettering on cover with Fair DJ in protective myllar cover SIGNED by both the author and her husband (actor James Mason, who also did the DJ art) on front free end paper. DJ is price clipped at bottom of front flap. Name of previous owner glued onto same page as signatures along with some pencilling from previous owner. Moisture stains to bottom of spine and interior corresponding bottom section of DJ, although this is not visible on the ouitside of the DJ. Shipping and wear to top and bottom of DJ. Shelfwear and rubbing to top and bottom of book spine and covers. Otherwise, the volume is quite sound. Spine is straight and tight. One page appears to have been creased to mark place, but otherwise no creases, tears, or markings. A very nice copy.

Very Good second printing (marked L-F on copyright page) of 1956 cloth with gilt lettering on spine. No DJ. Spine is flat and tight. Shelf wear to bottom of spine and boards. Major flaws include a sizable 1x2 inch abrasion on front cover (and what appears to be a smudge of whiteout that runs about 2 1/2 inches. The previous owner had stamped his named in three places (inside the front cover, on the opposite end papers and on top of the pages) and in each location the previous owner has also attempted to blot out that name with a black magic marker. So three sizable marks. The latter on top of the pages makes it seem at first glance like a remainder, but it's not. Underlining with a red pencil on pages 231-236. No creases, marks (except as noted), or tears on pages. A very good copy overall. Index. 266 pages.

No markings, creases of tears (except as noted above to DJ), or tears. I would list if as New except for a few light smudges to the outside of the last twenty pages (when viewed with pages shut). This can probably be erased with a pencil eraser, but I am too tired to stand up and go fetch it tonight. Easier to mark it down and save you money. Such is my nature. Notes, index. 299 pages.
