Newport Jazz Festival Photo Archive 1966 & 1967--1260 Photos, Newport, Rhode Island Newport Jazz Festival is an annual multi-day jazz music festival held in Newport, Rhode Island, beginning with the first festival in 1954. Throughout the years, Newport hosted many great jazz musicians, some returning year after year. Collection includes 1260 Photos (35mm negatives) and features mostly "concert" images although there are some backstage scenes, informal posed shots and views of the audience. Concert images capture the intensity and joy of these monsters of jazz. While we have not identified the photographer(s), they clearly were good and had access to the stage and the musicians at various venues. Many close-up photographs show the intensity and concentration of the musicians with their bandmates. You can almost feel the music through imagery. Bear faint circular date stamp for Montrose, PA, A 12 1/2 cent rate, and is addressed to Hon. William Jessup, Stroudsburg, Monroe County, Penna. This is a three-page manuscript letter written to Judge William Jessup by his wife, Amanda. William Jessup (1797-1868) was presiding judge of the 11th judicial district of Pennsylvania; he was one of the committee of three that was sent by the governors of Pennsylvania, New York, and Ohio in 1861 to confer with President Lincoln about raising 75,000 men for military service. [President Andrew Johnson] Lot of 2 Presidential Signature Stamped Military Commissions for Brevet Brigadier Generals David Bell McKibbin and Oliver Paul Gooding, Washington D.C., 1865-1866, 15.5 x 19.5 inches, 1 pp each. Two oversized vellum documents, each with two highly detailed engravings and seal of the United States War Office; half of War Office seal missing on McKibbin document; corners lightly creased and worn; creases from being previously folded; overall very good condition. Both documents bear stamped signatures of President Grover Cleveland and Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. Additionally, the commission for David B. McKibbin bears the signature of Edward D. Townsend, then Assistant Adjutant General of the United States Army. The commission for Oliver P. Gooding bears an Assistant Adjutant General signature as well, though I am unable to decipher the name. A fantastic and well-rounded collection of drafts, notes and manuscripts of a noted New Jersey educator and historian, Arthur L. Johnson. Some of the materials relate to the history of education in the New Jersey area, and others attempt to bring light to the medical and medicinal practices of Native Americans. There is also content on the fascinating history of the murder of a passionately pro-American chaplain's wife during the Revolutionary War. Arthur L. Johnson served as the superintendent of schools for Union County, New Jersey for 45 years. He founded the Union County Junior College, and helped organize the Union County Band and Orchestra Summer School, as well as the Eastern Conservatory of Music and Arts. Six items, including five signed by Nevada senator John P. Jones (1829-1912). Very good condition overall. Collection details below. John P. Jones was a politician who served as a Republican United States Senator from Nevada for 30 years. He made a fortune in silver mining, serving for a time as superintendent of the Crown Point silver mine in Gold Hill, Nevada, which was part of the Comstock Lode of silver ore. In 1874, Jones joined with fellow Nevada senator William M. Stewart, and bought controlling interest in the Panamint silver mines near Death Valley in Inyo County, California; that same year, he bought Colonel Robert S. James Joyce only read for two recording projects; one recording from Ulysses and two separate recordings from the last few pages of the Anna Livia Plurabelle chapter of Finnegans Wake. Only the second of the two Anna Livia Plurabelle recordings were commercially pressed, the first was supposedly discarded because of technical imperfections. At least four pressings exist of Joyce's reading of Anna Livia Plurabelle, including a scarce few of the 'discarded' recording.
