Description:
Paris, 27 May 1867. In French. 3 pp. 10 x 8 inches, two clean tears neatly repaired, slight toning but generally good. Moritz Hermann (Boris Semyonovich) von Jacobi (1801 – 1874), Russo-German engineer and physicist born in Potsdam. Jacobi worked mainly in Russia. He furthered progress in galvanoplastics, electric motors, and wire telegraphy. He developed the maximum power theorem known as Jacobi’s Law. In 1838, he discovered galvanoplastics, or electrotyping, a method of making printing plates by electroplating. The stereotype was an impression taken from a form of movable lead type and used for printing instead of the original type. This technique is used in relief printing. He also worked on the development of the electric telegraph. In 1842-1845 he built a telegraph line between Saint Petersburg and Tsarskoe Selo using an underground cable. In 1867 he was a Russian delegate to the Commission on measurement units at the Paris World's Fair. He was a strong proponent of the metric system.

Stanhope served on the HMS Warspite 50-gun ship with captains Sir John Hay and Sir Provo William Parry Wallis. These ships served the North America, West Indies, and Mediterranean ports. He was appointed in December 1846 to the HMS Queen 110-gun ship of Sir John West at Devonport. Stanhope later served from August 1847 in the Pacific on the HMS Asia 84-gun ship commanded by Rear-Admiral Phipps Hornby.[4] Stanhope became a Captain in October 1858. Description:
67 St Pauls Road, Canden Square,16 February 1877. 1 page 7 x 4 inches, some light stains, neatly mounted at corners. Uncommon. Charles Henry Jeens (1827-1879), engraver, postage stamp designer. He started working for Perkins, Bacon & Co, being the junior engraving partner to William Humphrys. It is not always clear who engraved which stamps, but Jeens is thought to have been responsible for quite a few British Colonial stamps. The head of the 1859 Ceylon definitive was engraved by Jeens and placed in an existing frame from the Tasmania definitives. The same head would also be used for the 1859 definitives of the Ionian Islands. Another of Jeens' engraved portraits of Victoria was for the 1860 4d and 2s definitives of South Australia. Jeens worked not only for Perkins, Bacon & Co. It is also almost certain he did a few stamps for the National Bank Note Company of New York, engraving the 5c and 24c United States definitives of 1861. Outside Jeen's philatelic work, he also engraved… Read More
