[New Orleans], 1827.. 28pp. Stitched as issued. Spine reinforced with tissue, some splitting. Minor soiling and wear, last two leaves lightly dampstained. Very good. In a half morocco and cloth slipcase, spine gilt. During the War of 1812, Andrew Jackson had established martial law during his occupation of New Orleans. State senator Louis Louaillier wrote an article criticizing Jackson's military dictatorship and was arrested; subsequently Judge Dominic Hall objected to Jackson's suspension of habeas corpus and Louaillier's arrest, and Hall was also arrested for treason. Upon his release, Hall fined Jackson the immense sum of $1,000, which was later deemed by several official parties to be an outrageously large fine. This pamphlet, issued during the presidential campaign of 1828, speaks of the injustices perpetrated by Jackson against Louaillier, urging citizens to vote instead for John Quincy Adams (who lost anyway). Second edition, published a year after the first. An updated version of Jackson's biography of Harrison, used as campaign literature for his 1840 bid for president. Baltimor, 1827. 19,[1]pp. Stitched, as issued. Institutional ink stamp and shelf mark at head of titlepage. Moderate tanning and foxing. Good. Untrimmed. An animated defense of Andrew Jackson and an attack on John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay by Jackson's supporters in Maryland, led by Roger B. Taney, ahead of the 1828 presidential election. Adams and Clay are derided as thieves of the prior election (in which Adams won the Electoral College but not the popular vote) and Jackson is lauded as a military hero and political paragon in the mould of George Washington. It also lists the people chosen to run Jackson's campaign in the state. Only a handful of copies in OCLC. SABIN 45053. SHOEMAKER 28688.

A rare broadside recounting Andrew Jackson's infamous execution of Private John Woods, published in 1828 by Jackson's opponents during the 1828 election. There was considerable mud-slinging between the Jackson and Adams camps during that campaign, which eventually saw the defeat of incumbent John Quincy Adams and the election of Andrew Jackson. This dense broadside recounts the events of March 1814 at Fort Strother during the Creek Campaign, when Jackson charged John Woods, an eighteen-year-old militiaman, with disobedience, disrespect, and mutiny. Washington, 1830. Broadside, 25 1/2 x 19 3/4 inches, printed on silk and mounted on paper. Some scattered tears and slight silk loss, mainly in margins, but with a few text tears. Expertly matted, and protected with mylar sheet. A very striking broadside, evidently intended for presentation to members of Congress, as it bears the printed inscription: "Respectfully inscribed to the Twenty-First Congress...By the Publisher." The text is Jackson's first State of the Union Message, of December 8, 1829, and printed in January 1830. Any early broadsides printed on silk are very rare.

"Who can deny that, in all the foregoing particulars, a fearful change has taken place? Who can compare our condition in 1829, with our condition at present, and honestly say, that our government has not essentially altered its character [for the worse]?" Includes correspondence between James Gowen and Samuel D. A printing of various critical statements made by the MASSACHUSETTS JOURNAL against Andrew Jackson, his relations, and his supporters, intended to demonstrate the bias and untrustworthiness of the paper, and perhaps newspapers in general, to Jackson supporters. Targets of the paper's ire include Jackson, his wife, Martin Van Buren, and editors of pro-Jackson papers

Washington, December 10, 1832.. Broadside, 23 1/2 x 18 1/2 inches, printed on silk in six columns within an ornamental border. Silk slightly frayed at head and foot; occasional foxing, almost entirely in margins. Very good. Framed. This proclamation is President Jackson's famous response to the nullification ordinance recently passed by the state of South Carolina. It prints extracts from the Ordinance, followed by Jackson's angry response in which he denounces nullification as rebellion and treason, warning the citizens of South Carolina that he will use every power to enforce the laws. Sabin, who erroneously gives a date of 1833, notes that "a few copies were printed on satin, with ornamental border," such as the present copy. There was also a Hartford printing on silk, in six columns; a Boston printing on silk, in seven columns; and at least two New York printings on silk. SABIN 35352. STREETER SALE 1738 (ref).

Very good. An unidentified edition of this pamphlet attacking Andrew Jackson, published during the 1828 presidential campaign. Includes a brief history of Jackson's life and military career, specifically during the War of 1812. Stories and dates were taken from John Eaton's 1824 book, THE LIFE OF ANDREW JACKSON..., though Eaton's work was pro-Jackson and the present publication puts a distinctly dastardly spin on Jackson's wartime deeds. Several works with this title in Shoemaker, though not this edition. Miles suggests Portsmouth, New Hampshire as the place of publication, based on a manuscript note on another copy. The final lines of text do appeal to the "Freemen of New Hampshire," urging them to vote for a local candidate who supports John Quincy Adams in the presidential race. MILES 24.

A collection of Jackson's most important messages, including a bevy of annual messages and his "Message in Relation to Texas, Dec. 21, 1836," to which is prefixed a brief biography. A scarce printing of several anti-Jackson pieces from Pennsylvania newspapers during the 1828 presidential campaign. The first short tract is an indictment of Jackson's conduct in Florida during the Seminole War by a former General and Senator, Andrew Lacock. The second is a denouncement of Jackson by a former supporter, and the third prints prior critical statements of Jackson by some of his current supporters. Not in AMERICAN IMPRINTS; only three copies are located by OCLC, at the New York State Library, University of Rochester, and the College of William & Mary. Quite rare in the market; this is the first copy we have handled. OCLC 9354408.

A rare variant printing of an 1828 campaign attack on "Old Hickory," not matching any of the three paginations in Sabin nor any of the entries in AMERICAN IMPRINTS. It is not a very flattering biography, to say the least. The text concludes with Jefferson's famous line, "one might as well make a sailor of a cock, or a soldier of a goose, as a president of Andrew Jackson." SABIN 35366 (different pagination). A scarce Ohio imprint collecting President Andrew Jackson's communications with Congress, including both inaugural addresses, all eight of his State of the Union speeches, various messages, vetoes, proclamations, and special messages on France and Texas. Also includes a short biographical sketch. AMERICAN IMPRINTS records a similar work published in Concord the same year, but does not record this imprint.
