American statesman and soldier Andrew Jackson was inaugurated as the seventh President of the United States of America in 1829 after defeating President John Quincy Adams in a landslide electoral victory. Throughout his term, Jackson sought to reduce the power of the federal government in favor of agrarian sympathies which resulted in the redistribution of the Native American population and the ascendancy of the party… Read more

London: Duckworth and Co, 1898. First edition of this classic Henry James novel. Octavo, original cloth. In very good condition. From the library of American suffragette Florence Humphrey with her bookplate to the pastedown. This lengthy novella centers on an unnamed London telegraphist who becomes involved in the personal lives of the senders of the often cryptic telegrams submitted to her as she sits in the "cage" of the post office. Description:
London: William Heinemann, 1897. First edition of this novel by Henry James. Octavo, original cloth. In very good condition. The Spoils of Poynton traces the shifting relations among three people and a magnificent collection of art, decorative arts, and furniture arrayed like jewels in a country house called Poynton. Mrs. Gereth, a widow of impeccable taste and iron will, formed the collection over decades only to have it torn away from her when her son Owen decides to marry a frivolous woman. The story is largely told from the viewpoint of Fleda Vetch, a keenly intelligent young woman of straitened circumstances who, shortly after becoming the intimate friend and companion of Mrs. Gereth, falls in love with Owen. Sympathetic to Mrs. Gereth's anguish over losing the fine things she patiently collected, Fleda shuttles between the estranged mother and son, becoming ever more involved in their affairs.

Description:
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1904. First edition of this classic James novel. Octavo, original cloth, gilt titles to the spine, gilt topstain. In very good condition with light rubbing and wear. A nice example. Set in England, this complex, intense study of marriage and adultery completes what some critics have called the "major phase" of James' career. The Golden Bowl explores the tangle of interrelationships between a father and daughter and their respective spouses. The novel focuses deeply and almost exclusively on the consciousness of the central characters, with sometimes obsessive detail but also with powerful insight. The title is taken from Ecclesiastes 12: "Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern. Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity."
