Description:
Good+. 1818. On offer is a superb early 19th Century manuscript relic of complex French mathematics and arithmetic education and scientific lore being a handwritten journal with over 600 pages of handwritten questions, theories, examples and other complex mathematical and geometric forms and equations including statistics and navigation being what appears to be an advanced student of the subject's personal workbook in a fine small hand and very attractively drawn mathematical diagrams throughout. Very fine precise writing illustrated throughout by graphs and geometric forms. We surmise the book was being prepared for final submission to their professor though not done given the title page was stopped with only the three faint letters: "G I N". Polished mottled calf and all edges gilt; internally, signs of stains and old mold stains to prelims and last section, notably last leaves, otherwise some intermittent toning and browning, slightly cocked. 8 vo., 19 x 13 cm. San Francisco, California CA. Good. 1882. On offer is the 1882 handwritten manuscript diary of Mary Ida McCormick, teacher, student and indefatigable optimist whose positive attitude and wonderful outlook on life is evidenced on nearly every written page. Even the death of her father in October is laced with her thanks that he went easy and he was comforted with his family and friends. Weeks later she gives thanks that the family's loss of their precious father is little compared to the happiness she feels that he is in a better place and free of pain. Another entry particular interest is Mary's Oct. 19th note that as of this day they six years before when they came west from the east. Research suggests Mary and family hailed from the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania area. Other snippets include: her new students 'two china boys'; snow storm Jan 12; conviction of Garfield's assassin; and names mentioned include: Rev. FLUSHING, MICHIGAN FLINT. Good+. 1892. On offer is a very interesting diary from 1892 written by teenage boy living in rural America. The diary measures 5" by 3 1/2 inches and is very good condition. There are about 250 pages - 182 actual diary pages and 60 pages Memoranda, Cash Accounts, etc sections of the book. The diary portion is 100% complete and there are various entries in the Accounts and other memoranda sections Our writer remains unidentified throughout the diary. There is nothing specific enough to identify him. And it is a him - a 15 year old boy at the beginning of the year. He lived on a farm close to town. There are contextual clues that suggest this town is Flint, MI as it is mentioned a number of times. He was religious in keeping his diary and through it we can see what life would be like for a mid-teens boy in rural/small town America just prior to the end of the 19th century. As can be expected, there is a very predictable routine in his life. He attends school… Read More

UNITED STATES - SCOTLAND. Good. 1928. On offer is an interesting collection of loose-leaf notes that describe an Atlantic crossing in the heyday of the Roaring Twenties. This 'journal' consists of 38 handwritten pages on ships stationary. The pages are in good condition and the handwriting is quite legible. In size, they measure 7.75 inches by 5.0 inches and are 100% complete. These loose-leaf pages were written by an unknown author. We only know her first name - Sadie. She refers to another woman (Frances), her father, and a young boy/man named Tom Jr. accompanying her. In another place she refers to their group as their family. They are crossing the Atlantic Ocean on board RMS Tuscania. A number of pages carry a date in the month of July and a coloured postcard accompanying the manuscript depicts the Tuscania and carries a post mark dated July, 1928. Shipboard life was a constant round of meals, games and dancing. Card playing was a very popular way to pass the time: "A… Read More

The diary measures 6.8' x 4.5', has 126 numbered pages with 3 daily entries on each page and about 75% complete. The front cover of the diary is completely detached, the back cover is loose, but otherwise it is in good condition. The diary provides an excellent picture of what life for a girl from a well-off family was like in a small Pennsylvania town in 1930s. She writes about her dreams and aspirations - she wants to teach children in poor district or teach ethics abroad, and documents her everyday life. Her diary is full of details characteristic to those days,… Read More

NOT IDENTIFIED. Fair. 1960. On offer is an outstanding personal notebook/journal written by a sailor in the mid-20th Century. The soft cover notebook measures 7 inches by 4 inches. The cover has separated from the notebook and one page has come loose but the entire journal is complete. The pages show some discolouration from age. There are 112 pages (un-numbered) and it is approximately 90% complete. There are many pictures and articles glued into the notebook. Many of these illustrations date back to the early years of the 20th Century. The journal is entitled Sea Lore Vol II. The author is unknown. Referring to great sailing ships over 50 to 60 years, context suggests that this notebook was likely written in the early 1960s by a man who loved the sea and sailing ships. There are much older newspaper clipping, for example the Laura Ann Barnes aground in 1921. The journal is a fascinating look into the world of sailing in the late 19th and early 20th Century. The pages contain notes,… Read More

ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA. Fair. 1908. On offer is a chatty diary covering parts of 1908, 1909, 1910 and 1911. No one year is complete and entries often skip days or weeks. The front cover is missing and the back cover is only very loosely attached. The pages are sewn together. The righting is clear and legible. The writer lives in Erie, PA, an industrial manufacturing city that was a key link in the iron and steel industry on the Great Lakes. From context, the writer appears to be a woman living with her husband and family. Her second entry notes the arrival of the 8 hour work day for telegraphers. The tone is chatty and entries include references to business, personal and social life events: "The Erie strike has been declared settled and this is the day the old machinists were to return to work but none of them did. It contains 365 pages plus memorandum pages. It is about 35% complete including memo pages. The leather cover is in good condition and all pages are intact. Given its small size, the handwriting is dense but readable. The author is unknown. Although there is no biographical information about him, there are some clues about the writer. On March 8th, 1928, he visited the Medical Appeals Board in Cardiff, Wales. Earlier entries noted several visits to his doctor. He is likely a WWI veteran who is a member of the British Legion. British Legion membership at the time was restricted to veterans. The volume contains 104 pages plus numerous Memoranda pages. The cover, though worn, is intact. The spine has broken and the binding is loose. However, all pages are intact. Written in English, Greek and Hebrew, the handwriting is clear and legible. Some letters and words are written in a very decorative manner and an 'Engraver' style of font is used in many places. The author of the volume is unknown. There is a reference much later in the book to a William Green but no connection to the book can be clearly drawn. The book is a printed diary for the year 1884. It was printed in and used in England. However, it was used more as a notebook to record prayers, reflections and esoteric thoughts than as a daily diary. On offer is an interesting journal of an American student of Marylands Charlotte Hall Military Academy immediately following the Civil War. The author of this journal is Ethan Allen Jones II. He was born in Maryland in 1851 and passed away in 1932 at the age of 81. Our informal research has not been able to discover any additional biographical information about him. A note within the book identifies the owner and the date along with the following: "Commenced under the instructions of Mr. Edward [ ] at Charlotte Hall School, April 10th, 1865". Jones was 14 when he began this journal. The book serves as a journal where words and writings that were evidently important to him were gathered together for him to reflect upon. On offer is an excellent skin charter being a land grant from Charles II to well-noted jurist James Dalrymple, 1st Viscount of Stair, Scotland with mentions the Dukes of Rothes and Lauderdale, who were also prominent Scotsmen. Dalrymple was famed not only for his legal judgments but also he was a prominent character in Scotland's history having been involved in the negotiations between Charles and the Scottish Parliament. This grant was given at Edinburgh on the 10th of December 1680, absent of seals. There is another note on the back of the parchment to say that the charter was written at Edinburgh on the second of March 1681, suggesting the deal was struck in December but that the charter was not actually drawn up until the next March. Historically the Charters falls squarely between the Restoration period and when he was prominent until his sympathy with the Covenanters at the time of the Scottish Test Act caused him to lose (1681) his… Read More

Very Good+ with no dust jacket. 1898. Original Cloth. Two handwritten diaries written by a very young child, Ina (or Ira?) A. Eastman, of Seaconia, New Hampshire. At first, I thought these were written by a boy, but at the end on the 1899 diary, there are mentions of ribbons and fabric in the memo section. The other diary is from 1898. The child wrote everyday, but never mentioned a birthday. She seems to have been about 9 or 10 years old. Some examples of her writing are below: It is a nice day. Henry Courser stayed here last night. Mamma, Jay and I have been down to grandpas. Papa finished drawing wood today. It is a nice day. Willis Smith has been here. Papa and Jay have been down to Mr. Taylor’s. Gale Eastman and Charley Tilton have been here. It has rained some. Papa has been down to Mr. Taylor’s to butcher.
