Description:
SHE, Longmans, Green & Co., 1887, first English and first hard-cover edition, professionally recased with the bevelled boards and gold-gilt lettering and images retained with the original spine laid down, some wear to the fore edge corner tips of the front cover, else a bright, tight vg copy of this now classic tale which has never been out of print. Filmed several times. (From Wikipedia: "In his autobiography Haggard writes of how he composed SHE in six weeks in February and March 1886, having just completed Jess, which was published in 1887. Haggard claimed that this was an intensely creative period: the text "was never rewritten, and the manuscript carries but few corrections". Description:
DAWN, Appleton, 1887, first American edition, (one of apparently three published that year), 2 vols., bottom of spines lightly chipped, front and rear covers lightly foxed, else a vg copy in wraps as issued. The authors first novel, published in the U.K. in 1884 as a triple decker and sold at auction several years ago for more than £6000, this edition is perhaps even more difficult to acquire (as any paperback book more than a century old would be). In Allen's recently published THE HAGGARD GUIDE, he states that there is no American edition of this work! In Scott's earlier bibliography of the works of H. Rider Haggard, he again makes no mention of this publication. RARE and virtually unknown in this format.
