Pictorial boards lightly rubbed to top and tail of spine and to corners. School Prize plate to front end paper dated 1924, and name erased from half title page otherwise clean. With eight full page colour illustrations by the author and further line drawings to the text. Containing two sections, 'Friendship' and secondly 'Treachery', these stories are taken from the old Indian classic called Hitopadesha. The original stories are embedded in a mass of moral maxims and here the author has taken considerable liberty with one or two of the stories to make an attractive and readable book for children, and not an English version of an India classic

1st printing with unclipped dust jacket. Jacket is in fair to good condition with loss to the bottom of the jacket spine and chipped to the top and corners and a few repaired tears along edges. The book itself is in very good clean condition throughout. The novel is set in occupied Germany following the end of World War II, the lead character is a black American soldier who re-enlists in the Army as a means of escaping the oppression of Harlem. The story exposes the racial prejudice and hatred experienced by many Black soldiers in WWII and the characters constant battle against authority which eventually leads him into desertion and a life of crime (see jacket flaps in photos) A stunning novel by the author of "Aftermath" who experienced much of the same hostility while serving in the US Army in Europe both during and immediately after World War II
