Catawba County is located in Western North Carolina. This rare book lists over 1500 soldiers from the area and gives a bio of each. Tom Broadfoot reports that it is seldom found in good condition. Not the case with this excellent copy. Not only a valuable Civil War book, but an important genealogical tool.

NY: Appleton, 1862. War dated 1862. Hard Bound. 8" X 5 1/2. VG+. Exceptional copy./None. Halleck's manual was first published around 1846 and underwent several publishings. General Halleck became President Lincoln's chief military consul. His field accomplishments in the Western Theater early in the War were not sterling. He was known as "Old Brains." This manual is identified with Henry Kip as shown by his signature and an 1862 date on the front gluedown. There were fifteen Henry Kips who served in the War, which one was he is not determined.

n.p.: Military Historical Society of Massachusetts, n.d.. Off print. Wraps. Spine is chipped, but overall VG/VG+./None. The author was the surgeon for the 41st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He and his unit served in the West and took part in all the big battles there. He has a short paragraph or two on most of the battles. A great account of the capture of brown's Ferry near Chattanooga relieving the supply shortages. There are brief accounts of an execution, about the common soldier, the negro soldier and a soldier's funeral. Hart covers many facets of the military surgeon ranging from his appliances, who he is, the common soldier, field operations, etc. A scarce piece. This an off print from the extensive Massachusetts Military works. This article came from Volume XIII of the series so has unusual pagination. Over 50 pages of text making it a long dissertation from this source.

Anything Missouri and Kansas related to the Civil War is hard to find. Nevins I-38: "A personal narrative, by an officer of a Kansas Colored unit; emphasizes the service of Kansas militiamen." NY: American Bank Note Co, 1882. First. Hard Bound. Both front endpapers missing. Book a little loose but overall text is VG. Biding has a little rubbing. Gold spine lettering bright/None. The unit history for the Seventh Vermont Infantry. The unit served primarily in Louisiana but also other places in the Deep South like Vicksburg, Florida and Texas. The 7th was one of the units protecting Fort Pickens near Pensacola. Information on that part of the War is extremely scarce. I know as I once lived there. There are several pages of their Death Roll, likely most contributed to disease.There is a roster of the unit personnel also.
