Hickory, NC: Clay Printing, 1911. First. HB. Red Cloth. It has a library sticker on the front pastedown, no other marks. Overall VG./No Jacket.. Nevins II-223. Catawba County is located in Western North Carolina. This rare book lists over 1500 soldiers from the area and gives a bio of each. Tom Broadfoot reports that it is seldom found in good condition. Not the case with this excellent copy. Not only a valuable Civil War book, but an important genealogical tool.

NY: Appleton, 1862. War dated 1862. Hard Bound. 8" X 5 1/2. VG+. Exceptional copy./None. Halleck's manual was first published around 1846 and underwent several publishings. General Halleck became President Lincoln's chief military consul. His field accomplishments in the Western Theater early in the War were not sterling. He was known as "Old Brains." This manual is identified with Henry Kip as shown by his signature and an 1862 date on the front gluedown. There were fifteen Henry Kips who served in the War, which one was he is not determined.

NY: Appleton, 1862. 1862 War dated edition. HB Manual. Excellent copy. Hinges good, gold spine lettering bright. Minor "small spot" foxing to first few pages./No Jacket.. This an 1862 edition (third) carrying a "during the War" premium. Halleck pre-Grant leader of the Union Army, very active in Union operations early in the War. He was noted for his intellect, called "Old Brains" by some.

Little Rock: Tunnah & Pittard, 1903. First. HB. Spine excellent with bright gold lettering. Hinges perfect, tight and square. Overall VG+.. A scarce reminiscence by an Arkansas private, CSA. Unusual book, starts like a novel then gets into anecdotes. Author served in the 25th Arkansas Infantry. Very difficult to find military history of that state's units. Says Vol I on the title page but that's all that was published. Book published w/o frontispiece as stated in Dornbusch and Nevins.

NY: Bailliere Brothers, 1865. First. HB Manual. Spine chipped with pieces missing. Real shaky spine, needs relaying. Rest VG./No Jacket. A RARE AND EXPENSIVE CIVIL WAR SURGEON'S MANUAL. THIS A PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE SANITARY COMMISSION TO THE SIXTH ARMY CORPS. Great content, covers virtually all medical aspects of the military surgeon. Case studies and an interesting commentary on the quality of Afro-American troops in the back. Many ads showing scarce medical books. Large book exceeding 600 pages.

Richmond: Whittet & Shepperson, 1935. First. HB. Near fine copy./Near fine.. Nevins I-86. Not much on General R.S. Ewell, an acceptable division commander, but questionable corps commander. Highly criticized for his role at The Wilderness.

Macon: J.W. Burke, 1928. First. Hard Bound. VG+./None.. Harris served in the 16th VA Cavalry. He later became the governor of Georgia. Book full of short anecdotes. Coulter 215. Dornbusch II-1262. Nevins I-100.

n.p.: Military Historical Society of Massachusetts, n.d.. Off print. Wraps. Spine is chipped, but overall VG/VG+./None. The author was the surgeon for the 41st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He and his unit served in the West and took part in all the big battles there. He has a short paragraph or two on most of the battles. A great account of the capture of brown's Ferry near Chattanooga relieving the supply shortages. There are brief accounts of an execution, about the common soldier, the negro soldier and a soldier's funeral. Hart covers many facets of the military surgeon ranging from his appliances, who he is, the common soldier, field operations, etc. A scarce piece. This an off print from the extensive Massachusetts Military works. This article came from Volume XIII of the series so has unusual pagination. Over 50 pages of text making it a long dissertation from this source.

Carbondale, IL: Southern Illinois Press, 2012. First. Hard Bound. NF/NF. Scholarly study in a long neglected field. Large portions of post war state budgets were earmarked for this purpose. As many as 60,000 underwent amputation during the War.

NY: Neale Publishing, 1929. First. Hard Bound. VG overall. Book is square and tight with a darkened spine/lettering./None. The title is very descriptive of the narrative. This being the fateful campaign of 1864-5 into Tennessee that virtually destroyed the proud Confederate Army of Tennessee at Franklin and Nashville. Howes 336. Nevins I-32: "...thoroughly researched..." Winner of the Robert M. Johnston Military History Prize by the American Historical Society for 1920. Map VG+. Has a piece clipped piece of ephemera with it, a promotion by Neale about the book.

Contains sketches of the 5th, 8th, Carnes Battery, Wright's Brigade, 11th, 17th, 33rd, 7th Kentucky and Rust's Brigade besides being about the 16th Tenn Inf (CSA).

Philadelphia: Lindsay & Blakiston, 1863. Fourth American. War Dated. HB. Square and tight. Hinges good. Has two prior owners names inscribed, one from 1868./No Jacket. This is a fourth American edition, the first being an English edition. Very rare, covers pharmaceutical issues and how the body deals with those taken orally. A very scholarly study, it rec'd a major award from the London Medical Society in 1852. Contains the signature of Dr. S.B. Heckman, Reading, PA dated July 1868. A RARE WAR DATED MEDICAL BOOK!

London: Kegan Paul, Trench and Co, 1886. First. HB. Front and rear hinges starting but holding. Minor soiling around edges of boards. Square and tight./No Jacket. A very scarce first, many thinking it is the best on this overwhelming Confederate victory. Nevins I-32: A study of merit. Book was designed for Royal Army officer study without an axe to grind or excuses to make. With required maps. Small red book,

Savannah: Civil War Centennial Commission, 1961. First. Wraps. VG. Light age yellowing around the edges. But overall VG+./None.. Companies A and B became part of the 8th Georgia Infantry. The unit was commanded by Colonel Bartow who was killed at First Manassas. There are several rosters and a short biography of Bartow. A nice Georgia piece. BOOK SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR IN 1972.

Columbus: Ohio State University Press, 1930. First. Hard Bound. Near Fine/Near Fine.. The time has come for an impartial and non-controversial study of prisons North and South during the Civil War. Old hates have cooled..." (Publisher's note.) Arguably the best compilation of prisoner of war information. Extensive bibliography. Each prison is addressed individually. Nevins I-193: Best secondary account of military prisons, exhausting most published sources...especially adequate on exchange controversy and war psychosis. Doubt you can find a better copy!

Chicago: Church and Goodman, 1865. Foxed frontise, interior plates and title page. Slight wrinkling to top of pages and title page. It was near water sometime, but it did not damage the boards nor hinder the text./None.. Not a common book on subjects that did not receive much notoriety. Anything Missouri and Kansas related to the Civil War is hard to find. Nevins I-38: "A personal narrative, by an officer of a Kansas Colored unit; emphasizes the service of Kansas militiamen." Dornbusch II-1801. This indicates the 83rd Infantry, USCT.

Boston: Welch, Bigelow and Co, 1861. First. HB. Hinges good. Blind stamp on bottom of title page. Rest VG+./No Jacket. Civil War dated medical book used by military doctors in the field. Much reference material inside, no illustrations. Likely very rare. A manual likely kept close at hand due to the huge number of amputations performed during the War. Not common!!

NY: American Bank Note Co, 1882. First. Hard Bound. Both front endpapers missing. Book a little loose but overall text is VG. Biding has a little rubbing. Gold spine lettering bright/None. The unit history for the Seventh Vermont Infantry. The unit served primarily in Louisiana but also other places in the Deep South like Vicksburg, Florida and Texas. The 7th was one of the units protecting Fort Pickens near Pensacola. Information on that part of the War is extremely scarce. I know as I once lived there. There are several pages of their Death Roll, likely most contributed to disease.There is a roster of the unit personnel also.

NY: Putnam, 1912. First. Hard Bound. G+/VG-. Small pieces missing on the first two pages of the table of contents. Small cracks in the front gutter, rear OK. Some staining to the front board (see photo)./None. It contains 62 illustrations, mostly photos.. Extensive account of Elimira of over 450 pages. It contains a list of Confederate dead buried in Woodlawn Cemetery. There are testimonials from several Confederate prisoners as well as a detailed history of the camp from formation to closing after the War.
