The second title, Hermes, is among the most important and distinctive influences on the philosophy of language and the development of a universal grammar in the Enlightenment which Harris defines as: "that grammar which without regarding the several idioms of particular languages only respects those principles that are essential to them all" (Hermes, Bk I, Ch. 2).
