Beinwil am See Dr W Eichenberger, 1990. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. This is a massive set of early leaves. I have only seen one other of these sets in trade in the last twenty years. The set is meant to accompany the 1990 issue of Konrad Haebler's Alte Typographie und Buchkunst. That book about early printing, not present here, is common -- but only 50 of these sets of the original leaves was issued. It's a marvelous tour of early printing. 37 of 51 are cradle printing, none later than 1550. All are exemplary of developments in early typography in Germany, Italy and France. The emphasis is on Germany, though, which shows great variety. Size of the leaves varies, but all are presented in window mounts measuring 480 x 350 mm. (19 x 13 3/4"), and the whole is contained in a box measuring 19 3/4 x 14 1/4"; Text volume: 344 x 244 mm. (13 1/2 × 9 1/2"). Halbwachs was later taken by the Nazis and died at Buchenwald in 1945. Halbwachs' death is described in Jorge Semprun's harrowing account of the concentration camp. Halbwachs first studied philosophy with Henri Bergson, but later became Emile Durkheim's most important student. The Legendary Topography is his masterpiece, one of the truly great works of European sociology. The book is by far the most sophisticated discussion of how the monuments we see in the Holy Land were created by humans looking for the sacred. Accompanied by a large folio leaf from the 1471 printing of Nicholas of Lyra's "Postilla super totam Bibliam." The book and leaf (which is secured behind a hinged cloth mat and has slight old worm damage at bottom outer blank margin) contained in an impressive (15 1/2 x 11 3/4 inch) navy blue folding cloth box constructed of acid-free materials by Jace Graf of Cloverleaf Studio. Original brown cloth (with the catalog bound in), a VG+ copy (some fading to spine, wear to the yapped cloth edges, but not tatty). Bound by Bone & Son of Fleet Street, their tag on the back pastedown. Book is in a custom quarter morocco box (two piece -- in the old style), probably added in the 1920s -- black leather front piece and dark blue cloth sliding shell with chemise inside. Box is VG+, some staining to the cloth, minor wear, gold titles on the box very crisp and clear on the shelf. The book is held in a chemise that fits into the two-piece box.

This copy lacks the slipcase which so often shreds the dustjacket. No FEL card and I'm not sure if this had one. In any event, a lovely facsimile of the first edition.
