Description:
Chattanoga, TN, ca. 1950. Fifty-three original photographs ranging in size from 3 x 4 inches to 14 x 11 inches but with the large majority of them being of the larger size. An interesting selection of local photographs, from paddle-wheels to alligators. All silver gelatin. Very good contrast and condition. Paul W. Haasis was born around in 1898 in Florida but soon became a citizen of Chattanooga. As we cannot find him in any list of professional photographers we can presume that photography was his avocation. He entered four of his photographs to the competition of the Photographic Society of America, Pictorial Division. He seems to have favored a Rolleiflex and developed his own negatives. His entry sheets are included with this lot. He also entered a number of photographs to the local state fair competition and won two first prize ribbons (sheets and ribbons included). Aside from some self portraits the vast majority of the photographs are nature oriented and pictorial in orientation. One is… Read More

"Among the many current periodicals in the world, very few can claim such an authority, that even the oldest issues keep all their usefulness one century after their publication. That is however the case for Analecta Bollandiana, a journal of critical hagiography, edited and published since 1882 by the Société des Bollandistes in Brussels. Since the very beginning, the journal was conceived as a continuous updating of the prestigious Acta Sanctorum series, as well as an entirely new instrument devoted to hagiographical research. Bridgeport [CA] & Welllington [NV]: The author, (1963). First edition. Inscribed by the author on the title page (herself a member of the Hunewill family). Octavo. 54, [2] pp. Textual illustrations. Publisher's ochre wrappers with printed paper cover label. A very good copy Esther and Napoleon Bonaparte Hunewill married, crossed the Isthmus of Panama, and came to California in 1859. That same year, W.S. Bodey struck gold. In 1861, Esther and Napoleon founded Hunewill Ranch to begin supplying timber, hauled by teams of oxen, to build the young mining town of Bodie. When Mono Mills and the Bodie & Benton Railway began operations in 1881, the ever-enterprising family built a thriving business supplying beef to workers and residents in the burgeoning area instead. Then in 1931, the Hunewills added a guest ranch on the property to welcome paying visitors to learn to ride horses, herd cattle, and appreciate the majestic beauty of the area. The Hunewills are one of the region’s longest-established… Read More

Old and mild rippling to top margin. A very handsome copy. "Sam Davis is "The Boy Hero of the Confederacy." He wasn't a boy (he was 21 and battle-scarred) and although a combat veteran of several years of Civil War fighting, that's not where he became a hero. Injuries forced him into a less confrontational wartime role as a spy behind the Yankee lines -- and then he was caught, court-martialed, and hanged on a hill overlooking Pulaski on November 27, 1863" (Sam David Museum).

Berkeley: Friends of the Bancroft Library, [1949]. One of 500 copies printed by the Grabhorn Press. Large octavo. [x]. 79, [1] pp.With the map of San Diego in the text and the Disturnell map of the US and Mexico (folded as issued) laid into a separate decorative paper portfolio. Publisher's quarter off-white cloth over pattern-paper boards, printed paper spine label. An excellent copy. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo is the peace treaty, largely dictated by the United States to the interim government of a militarily occupied Mexico, that ended the Mexican-American War (1846–1848). The treaty provided for the Mexican Cession, in which Mexico ceded 525,000 square miles to the United States in exchange for $15 million and the ensured safety of pre-existing property rights of Mexican citizens in the transferred territories, the latter of which the United States in a significant number of cases failed to honor.

Hampton is very well known in the Western Art world and his paintings generally are in the realistic school. One of 25 signed and numbered copies with an original print made from a calotype negative by the author tipped in. "In this volume Hanlon turns conventional photographic history inside out, restoring American photography to its proper place among the great early traditions. Too often the United States is seen as a provincial player in calotype photography; a poor cousin to the Britons who invented the technique and the French who perfected it. In this book, we see early American photography as a vital part of that tradition—creative, dynamic, and influential. Accessibly written and exquisitely researched, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in photography and its origins. In addition to being a great reference work, it dramatically expands our understanding of the field." Phillip… Read More
