This unique copy is ex-library of the Gunnery with usual treatments and in library binding along with what appears to be minor burn damage.. First edition and interesting association copy. Volume I inscribed by Abbott Lawrence to William Cabell Rives. Lawrence was noted as an ambassador to Britain while Rives was a senator and ambassador to France. Notably, this important friendship was the subject to an 1846 book itself entitled Letters from the Hon. Abbott Lawrence to the Hon. William C. Foyle, Beeleigh Abbey.. First edition. #9 of 300 hand-numbered copies, of which this one of an unstated few bound in full stiff vellum with green silk ties and gilt-lettered spine. Filled to the brim with 50 illustrations of buildings and architectural details, including one etched plate, two photographic plates, and 47 illustrations in the text (32 of which are full-page). This copy appears to be signed (though we cannot find any other examples of her non-etched signature) by Godman's wife, Jessie, below the etched plate she illustrated. Includes hand colored "chronological chart of the history of England executed purposely for this work."
