This unique copy is ex-library of the Gunnery with usual treatments and in library binding along with what appears to be minor burn damage.. First edition and interesting association copy. Volume I inscribed by Abbott Lawrence to William Cabell Rives. Lawrence was noted as an ambassador to Britain while Rives was a senator and ambassador to France. Notably, this important friendship was the subject to an 1846 book itself entitled Letters from the Hon. Abbott Lawrence to the Hon. William C. Filled to the brim with 50 illustrations of buildings and architectural details, including one etched plate, two photographic plates, and 47 illustrations in the text (32 of which are full-page). This copy appears to be signed (though we cannot find any other examples of her non-etched signature) by Godman's wife, Jessie, below the etched plate she illustrated. An uncommon printing from the famous/infamous Minerva Press which is not found in McLeod or Blakey. 24mo. vii, 248pp., missing engraved frontispiece. McLeod (pg. 324 for 1805 printing). Scarce as Worldcat locates three copies as of October 2020.

London: A. Wilson, 1831. Good in publisher's black blindstamped cloth boards which are heavily fraying at the spine with some loss, hinges starting, some dampstaining and foxing to pages.. Revised edition to include history through the end of the reign of George IV who died a year prior to publication, amassing an fifteen additional pages. Includes hand colored "chronological chart of the history of England executed purposely for this work." While Goldsmith's work is ubiquitous, this edition is evidently scarce with only two copies located on Worldcat, both outside of the USA.

Very good minus in handsome modern full blindstamped calf with new endpapers by Dragonfly Bindery, toning and brittle front free endpaper with prior owner name, contents generally clean with tear to leaf, professional repair to title page not affecting text, scattered light foxing, still a pleasing copy.. First Scottish edition, which includes, among others, poems from Gray's most famous work, Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard (1751). For this edition, the Foulis brothers had Alexander Wilson cut a special font of double pica roman type. Updike, Printing Types, II: 143.
