Description:
Commentaries on all posters by Phyllis Freeman. From the Introduction by Clifton Fadiman: "On the other hand, some of the posters bear valiant witness to the perdurable. Here is Carlu's picture of someone who looks like "Maurice Chevalier" offering us the Methusaleh of aperitifs, Dubonnet. Look at the pretty, modestly Oriental 1925 poster on page 41 and rejoice that Jules Robin cognac is still alive and well. Trucher's 1903-4 poster celebrates Pouilly, a wind more popular than ever and perhaps, for all we know, still the favorite of cyclists. And, of course, Massiot's timeless Spaniard (the finest work of art, I think, of the lot) reminds us of that , some sixty years after he was conceived, the ports and sherries of the classic Sandeman are still available.
Poster art includes several examples of high historical interest, such as the famour Kitchener recruiting poster that effectively sold a delusion. Many others, equally effective, sell products of debatable value. But for the lover of wines and… Read More

Description:
From the front d.j. flap: "A magnificent embroidered bedspread and how it comes to be is the theme of this strongly visual picture book. Artfully, it explores in a fresh way the perennial interest of children in the "olden times" of a family. Maud and Amelia are two old sisters who live at each end of a long, long bed. Although they disagree about most things, they do agree that their plain white bedspread is the most boring feature of their boring life. So they decide to decorate it."

Description:
2nd revised edition. Text in German and English. From the Preface: "C/O Berlin is presenting Fred Herzog in the first major public exhibition of his work to be held in Germany, for which reason we have chosen to focus on the period from the fifties through the seventies."
"Herzog's photographs demonstrate that color photography is not the addition of color to a traditional black-and-white approach but an autonomous means of expression. although Herzog's use of color was initially intended as a clarifying tool in documentary photographs, it can be seen as an early example of the unique pictorial qualities and possibilities of the medium of color photography. His virtuosic handling of color is early evidence that the medium of color photography is governed by its own principles, and that color is just as important for the impact of a photograph as its composition and content." Description:
All of Leonard Baskin's prints are documented, and the vast majority are illustrated in this volume. As a sculptor, printmaker, and book creator and designer, Leonard Baskin stands among the artistic masters of our century. Of all his work, his prints have left the deepest mark upon his entire generation, in the words of poet Ted Hughes, they are "images of the extremes, the intimacies, the actualities of human suffering." Baskin's genius lies in his unerring ability to reveal essence--be it of the human condition, the atrocity of war, or nature's fragile order. Baskin prints, such as "The Man of Peace", have become icons of our time, carrying messages of increasing urgency to modern man. This is the first book to reveal Baskin's remarkable scope and versatility as a printmaker.
Included is a 6-page program in Portland, Oregon, 2007, "Graphic Force, Humanist Vision: Leonard Baskin Works on Paper. "Aug. 18-Nov. 11, 2007. (VG+)

Description:
From the d.j.: "The motivating force behind the Sumpter Valley Railway was the cry Timber-r-r! The humming saws of mills were hungry for logs, digesting them as fast as little locomotives could shift from hillside to millpond, then hauling millions of board feet of finished lumber to the Union Pacific connection at Baker. Born with the sumpter were an array of privately owned loggers like Oregon Lumber, Baker White Pine, Stoddard Lumber, W. H. Eccles and others. Each laid slim gauge rails into the woods and pulled out their log trains with Shays, Climaxes and Heislers. As huge stands of timber fell, thrifty loggers moved their tracks deeper into the blue Mountains. This is the complete story of this narrow gauge and the logging carriers."

Description:
A Large Print edition. SIGNED on the title page by the Author, and also INSCRIBED to Lyle and Gwen with a little homily, then signed again by Ray. Here's an excerpt about Ray's cabin: "The cabin was unbelieveably cold in winter and to keep a supply of firewood on hand with only a swede saw and axe for tools, and a saddle-horse with a lariat rope for hauling several hundred yards from the bush, was a never-ending job. Due to the cabin's aging, the lime and cement chinking between the spruce logs had shrunk and sometimes, with a northwest wind blowing, one could see the steam from hot tea in a cup on the table, drifting across the room. Complain as I did, to my superior officers, they simply would not believe how cold the cabin was."

Description:
From the d.j.: "The Red Star Line, one of the oldest and best known shipping lines ever to send ships out to sail the oceans, was founded in 1872 and liquidated in 1935. All of the Red Star ships, bearing such famous names as the VADERLAND, NEDERLAND, BELGENLAND, RHYNLAND, WESTERNLAND AND PENNLAND, sailed under the Belgian flag, although the Company was financed by Americans. Vernon E. W. Finch, once the youngest crew member on the Red Star ships, has written the whole story of this renowned shipping concern. His book is based on years of research, and contains many useful photographs of the Red Star ships, their interiors, their crews and the Red Star buildings. Vernon E. W. Finch himself says: "The end result is this book about an unusual maritime venture, written with the sole purpose of preserving for future generations a record as detailed as I could find about the Red Star Line."
