Title page with folds and a bit of loosening, else very good.

An over-sized b&w photo of the Pulitzer Prize and Nobel Prize-winning author, the image is of him from the shoulder up holding a pipe in his left hand while looking slightly to his right, lower left-hand corner carries Faulkner's name in cursive by the photographer, the lower right-hand corner is signed by Crowder and dated 1956, apparently the photographer was a Memphis doctor who was treating Faulkner for a "nervous" disorder in the 1950s, the verso carries Crowder's inscription ("For Mr. & Mrs. Vik/with best wishes/Richard B. Crowder/December 8, 1959"), this silver gelatin print measures 11X14 inches and is printed on (matte) canvas-textured paper. Very good with a bit of wear and some blotching from the printing process that only partially affects the image of Faulkner.

This is the very rare first issue of this paperback original with an aerial view of the "main floor" of a home on the verso of the title page, this generally unknown issue point is the result of a printer's error as this aerial room map actually belongs to ASE No. 827 (The Indigo Necklace by Frances Crane), this is No. 825 in this important series, designed to fit the pocket of a World War II American GI, issued by the Council on Books in Wartime, the Library of Congress includes only the usual, recorded state, while Carl Petersen may have had the scarcer first issue, it wasn't noted in the Serendipity catalogue of Petersen's personal Faulkner collection, see Petersen A22, this is one of the most difficult of all Faulkner "A" items, especially in this generally unrecorded first state. Reading crease, else very good plus.
