Very Good with no dust jacket. 1901. Manuscript. On offer is a typewritten job offer from the owner of a nursery wholesaler hoping to land a reliable new employee. Dated Feb 21,1901, and signed in ink by E. W. Fisk himself, this typewritten letter is a full page imploring a potential new hire to take a job as a salesman running a currently unmanned territory. Given the fact that each territory operator will work remotely, Fisk highlights the importance of hiring a man who is strictly honorable and upright. Fisk goes on to describe the benefits of working for his company: We have been in business for a long time and this long experience enables us to place the very best grade of stock grown in the hands of our salesmenit means you are able to sell over and over again in the same territory; that you are able to work up a better trade each season; that your customers will be glad to see you a second timeFisk even invites the candidate to verify their financial health with the First National… Read More

GRANVILLE OHIO. Fair. 1924. On offer is the original manuscript journal and diary handwritten by Mr. J. E. Pratt of Granville Ohio. Dated 1924 through 1927 Mr. Pratt was the grounds keeper for the area college which research suggests is today Denison University with numerous mentions are around the campus, including Stone Hall, Talbot Hall and King Hall. Over 121 handwritten densely filled pages Pratt writes about his home life, the work he does especially around the campus and of course, the weather. Personal entries are abundant as we sadly record the death of his mother and his thoughts on that. Here are some snippets: 1924-1927 "Cloudy. Looks like snow or rain. A very, very cloudy day. No rain, no sunshine, just clouds and more clouds. Not above 36 degrees all day. Topped and sawed down the old mulberry tree south of Pres. House. An old landmark. Mr. D. L. Davis thinks it was almost 100 years old. He used to climb it in his boyhood days." Moonlight, few clouds. Foggy.… Read More

Description:
France, 1900. On offer is a beautifully written historical recitation in French titled "Invasions Barbares" or in English the 'Invasion of the Barbarians.' While undated we believe this is an early 20th century manuscript wherein over 96 pages in lovely calligraphic hand we are told of the barbarian invasion of Europe complete with hand-drawn maps. One online source provides perspective: "The Migration Period, also called Barbarian Invasions or Völkerwanderung (German for "wandering of the peoples"), was a period of human migration which occurred within the period of roughly 300-700 CE in Europe,[1] marking the transition from Late Antiquity to the Early Middle Ages. The migration included the Goths, Vandals, Bulgars, Alans, Suebi, Frisians, and Franks, among other Germanic, Iranian and Slavic tribes. The migration may have been triggered by the incursions of the Huns, in turn connected to the Turkic migration in Central Asia, population pressures, or climate… Read More

Description:
United States. Good with no dust jacket. 1861. Ephemera. On offer is an interesting private letter, written in 1861 in mid-western America, requesting payment on an outstanding loan. The letter is a demand written to “Cousin Lewis” to repay a loan of $100.00. That $100 loan in 1861 was equal to about $3,000 in 2020, a respectable amount of money. It speaks to the position of the letter writer, one H. L. Eames. Eames may have been part of the Eames family who co-owned the City Bank of Eames, Allen & Co, located in Ottawa, Illinois. Quite possibly, the recipient was a guarantor on the note. In the letter, Eames makes his desire clear: I write to you at this time in relation to [ ] merchants note due last May for $100.00 and [ ]...because you are the one I look to for payment…This is a fine example of the type of informal credit facility that underpinned so much of early American capitalism. For a finance or banking professional, this would be an interesting addition to a… Read More

Liverpool, New York. Fair with no dust jacket. 1949. Softcover. On offer is the simple diary of Eva Mae (Bender) Eaton (1887-1969). Eva was born in upstate New York to parents Wilson and Clara (Rowe) Bender. She married Ransford Chas Eaton (1878-1939) in 1908. Between 1913 and 1918, Eva and Ransford had three children, Francis, Eugene and Howard. In 1927, they had baby Lois, who died at age 17 after a long illness. Eva kept this diary five years after Lois died, and 10 years after she was widowed. Eva writes most every day of 1949. She writes only the facts of what occurred each day, betraying absolutely no emotion, even when writing on the 5th anniversary of her daughter's death (July 4, 1949). However, her entries paint the picture of a 57-year-old woman who is hanging on and surviving all alone, finding moments of joy in outings when possible. While Eva has three living adult children, she doesn't mention them. The only names she writes are those of her employers - local women who have given her… Read More

Lowville, Lewis County, New York. Good with no dust jacket. 1934-1938. Softcover. On offer is a 5-year diary describing in detail the life of a woman in upstate New York during the Great Depression. The author of this diary is Lena J. (Ebblie) Robinson (1889-1963). She is married to William Garrett Robinson (1888-1981) and together they live in Lowville, Lewis County, New York. William was born in New York City and worked in sales, at different points selling real estate and working at a rubber/tire store. Lena was born in Lowville and worked as a teacher. They married in 1914. In 1917, William requested an exemption from the World War 1 US Army draft, claiming his reason for exemption as “physically unfit and dependent wife”. William grew up in an affluent home with many servants. However, our research shows that his adult life proved to be more of a struggle. Lena seems to have stopped working early into their marriage, and William found himself unemployed at points. They did… Read More

Description:
London England, 1886. On offer ALS Edmund Beckett, 1st Baron Grimthorpe (1816-1905), known previously as Sir Edmund Beckett, 5th Baronet and Edmund Beckett Denison. He was a lawyer, amateur horologist, and architect. In 1851 he designed the mechanism for the clock of the Palace of Westminster, responsible for the chimes of Big Ben. He was also responsible for rebuilding the west front, roof, and transept windows of St Albans Cathedral at his own expense. Although the building had been in need of repair, popular opinion at the time held that he had changed the cathedral's character, even inspiring the creation and temporary popularity of the verb "to grimthorpe", meaning to carry out unsympathetic restorations of ancient buildings. Part of Beckett's additions included statues of the four evangelists around the western door; the statue of St Matthew has Beckett's face. He later turned his attentions to St Peter's and then to St Michael's Church, both in the same city. In… Read More
