Description:
NY: Putnam Adult, 1995. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine. The uncommon softcover uncorrected proof. A near fine copy in off-white wraps with blue lettering. Sylvia Earle (b. 1935) is a standout marine biologist, oceanographer and explorer, often described as a Rachel Carson of the oceans. She has been a National Geographic explorer-in-residence since 1998, was the first female chief scientist of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and was named by Time Magazine as its first Hero for the Planet in 1998. Among many, many other accolades, she has won the Rachel Carson Award from the National Audubon Society and the Carl Sagan Award for Public Understanding of Science. Sea Change "is an enthusiastic celebration of that diversity and abundance [of the marine world]. It's also a profoundly sobering account of the shortsighted human assault on ocean life. The 'silent tide,' as one reviewer wrote, may lie just offshore." Blurbs by E.O. Wilson and Jane Goodall among…

Description:
Viking Adult, 1995. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. Inscribed on the front free endpaper in the year of publication: "5/2/95, To Jo--Thanks to an [eligible] reader--Gregg Easterbrook." An important and controversial tome that argued in 1995 that environmental trends were turning in a more positive direction, but clearly a view that was perhaps prematurely sanguine. Easterbrook was at the time undecided about climate change, but in 2006 agreed it had anthropogenic origins and a destructive trajectory. Paul Ehrlich among others criticized this book, but it was praised by others like Michael Specter. Fine book (and a hefty one) in a near fine jacket with a little rubbing. // Wood (+) River (=) Books specializes in nature writing and environmental literature, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions.

Description:
New Directions, Norfolk, 1944. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. The Poets of the Year Series. Inscribed to Stuart Wright, the noted North Carolina collector, bibliographer, and the publisher of Palaemon Press, who championed Eberhart and acquired his papers. Wright's Eberhart collection is now housed at East Carolina University (see their finding aid for biographies of both Eberhart and Wright and the history and scope of the collection). Wright was also the author of Richard Eberhart: A Descriptive Bibliography, 1921-1987. The inscription reads on the title page: "To Stuart Wright, from Richard Eberhart, in 1981." A golden book for an Eberhart enthusiast. He won both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award in Poetry and often wrote about the natural world, as in his famous poem "The Groundhog." A very good plus turquoise volume with some toning and wear to the edges of the boards, and toning to interior pages; in a very good dust jacket with some minor loss to upper and lower…

Washington DC: Island Press, 2008. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Inscribed on the title page: "For Jen, with thanks for a wonderful [illegible] on the international system. Paul." Uncommon signed, with no other copies available online as of this writing. Difficult to make out the middle of the inscription, but likely better or more familiar eyes can do so. Paul Ehrlich is best known for his deeply influential and controversial book The Population Bomb (1968) about overpopulation and resource scarcity, a topic which has defined his career and perhaps overshadowed his distinguished achievements in ecology and conservation biology (including classic butterfly studies). The book was called alarmist by some, but Ehrlich years later said that "perhaps the most serious flaw in The Bomb was that it was much too optimistic about the future." His wife Anne Ehrlich has been his steady collaborator and co-author, for which she probably has been under-recognized. In this ambitious and…

Various: Various. First editions. Hardcover. Near fine/Very good. A collection of four books by renown populations biologist and public intellectual Paul Ehrlich, all significant association copies inscribed respectively to Stephen J. Gould, Thomas Lovejoy, Nobel-winner Donald Glaser, and US Senator Joseph Tydings. Ehrlich is best known for his deeply influential and controversial book The Population Bomb (1968) about overpopulation and resource scarcity, a topic which has defined his career and perhaps overshadowed his distinguished achievements in ecology and conservation biology (including classic butterfly studies). The book was called alarmist by some, but Ehrlich years later said that "perhaps the most serious flaw in The Bomb was that it was much too optimistic about the future." National Geographic, 2010. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. An association copy, inscribed in the year of publication to Ehrlich's longtime family housekeeper in Santa Barbara: "For Paulina, Oh so wonderful to see you--With great love--Gretel, 2010." Scarce signed, and indeed a wonderful inscription. Paulina is mentioned in Ehrlich's latest book Unsolaced. An interesting association in that it speaks to Ehrlich's relative affluence and the lifestyle that she was perhaps escaping when she struck out for Wyoming where she wrote her classic The Solace of Open Spaces. Fine book in near fine jacket.

Description:
Washington DC: Island Press, 2004. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Fine. An association copy, inscribed on title page: "For Dick Sikora, with best wishes --great to meet a philosopher. Paul Ehrlich." Uncommon signed, with no other copies available online as of this writing. Richard Sikora was a longtime professor at the University of British Columbia. Among other contributions as a philosopher, he was the co-editor of the influential 1978 collection Obligations to Future Generations, one of the first to take on "whether and to what degree it can be morally incumbent on us to make sacrifices to bring happy people into the world or to avoid preventing them being brought into the world." This urgency of this question has of course only grown with time in light of increasing environmental crisis. Sikora's work thus overlaps to a significant degree with the work of the Ehrlichs. Paul Ehrlich is best known for his deeply influential and controversial book The Population Bomb (1968) about…

Capricorn Press, Santa Barbara, 1970. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Near Fine. Signed on the title page in blue ink. Ehrlich's first book, a volume of poems published in her hometown of Santa Barbara when she was just 24. At this point, she had had only a single poem published in the California Review, with no other credits. She'd find great acclaim thanks to her third book and first book of prose, The Solace of Open Space. A beautiful production in brown wrappers with brown endpapers, cover illustration by Judy Daniel, lettering in shades of blue and purple. Printed by Noel Young. One of 550 copies, with an additional 50 copies in cloth. San Francisco: Sierra Club Books, 1969. First thus. Hardcover. Fine/Near fine. Robert Osborn, Illustrator. An apparently uncommon illustrated hardcover edition (with no other copies available online as of this writing), published the year after The Population Bomb was first released as a mass market paperback in 1968. Inscribed by Ehrlich on the title page: "For Carl & Estelle, with warm regards, Paul Ehrlich." A deeply influential and controversial book about overpopulation and resource scarcity that has defined Ehrlich's distinguished career and perhaps overshadowed his achievements in conservation biology. The book was called alarmist by some, but Ehrlich years later said that "perhaps the most serious flaw in The Bomb was that it was much too optimistic about the future." Also of interest is the fact that it was co-authored by Paul's wife Anne Ehrlich, but the publisher insisted on crediting just Paul. Capra Press, 1992. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. An association copy, inscribed on the title page in the year of publication to Ehrlich's longtime family housekeeper in Santa Barbara: "for Paulina, with love, Gretel." Paulina is mentioned in Ehrlich's latest book Unsolaced. An interesting association in that it speaks to Ehrlich's relative affluence and the lifestyle that she was perhaps escaping when she struck out for Wyoming where she wrote her classic The Solace of Open Spaces. Ehrlich has also written her phone number. Laid in is a newspaper clipping from the Oct 1 1992 issue of the Santa Barbara Independent, an advertisement for Enrlich's presentation of the book on October 8 at the Fleischmann Auditorium at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. A nice inclusion, but it has left a faint rectangular stain on the half title page, and then a darker one on the inside front cover. Also light wear to edges and spine. Still a nice copy and momento of a hometown visit early in Ehrlich's career.
