[Salt Lake City], 1880. Stereoview. Albumen photograph [9.5 cm x 16 cm] on an orange mount [10 cm x 18 cm] Rubbing to corners of mount. View is a little faded with a spot to the left view near the head. Manuscript identification in ink on the reverse. Nice view of the original St. Mark's Schoolhouse that was located on the southeast corner of State Street and First South in downtown Salt Lake City (present site of the Federal Building). View shows St. Mark's School with a horse drawn cart out front. The cart's passenger is a young girl, a young boy stands behind the cart, and a woman is visible in the doorway of the school. St. Mark's School was founded in 1867 by the Episcopal Church, it was originally housed in a bowling alley (this was later the site of the Walker House), and then Independence Hall - this building was constructed to be the school in 1872 for a cost of $25,000. Later St. Mark's would join with Rowland Hall. The present-day Rowland-Hall campuses are a few blocks apart one in the 9th…

Description:
Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 1922. First Edition. 101pp. Octavo [25 cm] Brown cloth with the title printed on the spine. Near fine. Academic work on Mormon group life and culture, which would be revisited decades later by Arrington's Great Basin Kingdom. "To explain the Mormon community life in terms of its whole life process, its conflicts, its struggles, its crises, is the problem of this thesis. Although there were notions advocated by Joseph Smith which were antecedent to the conflict and which really occasioned it yet these were not important in themselves. Had it not been for the conflict which forced them upon the attention, they would perhaps not have survived. It is group conflict and struggles which have created and maintained the basic Mormon sentiments." - pg.9 Flake/Draper 3180.
