Description:
London / New York, Routledge, Year of Printing. 25.4cm x 20.3cm. XV, 304 pages with 76 figures. Original illustrated softcover. Very good + condition with only minor signs of wear. An in-depth exploration of dualist-interactionism, a concept Sir John Eccles developed with Sir Karl Popper in "The Self and its Brain", in the context of a wide variety of brain activities relating to self-consciousness. Opening with a critical discussion of material hypotheses on the relationship of mind and brain, it aims to demonstrate the explanatory power of dualist-interactionism in contrast to the poverty and inadequacy of materialist theories of the mind. The "mind" is accepted as an entity of divine origin which interacts with and controls the material brain. Sir John shows that dualist-interactionism offers valuable insights into the higher levels of human experience that cannot be accommodated to materialist theories of the mind - for example: the whole range of values; freedom of the will and moral… Read More

1971. Dublin, The Educational Company of Ireland, 1971. 12 cm x 18,5 cm. XXXI, 107 pages, 6 illustrations. Original Softcover. Excellent condition with only minor signs of wear. Castle Rackrent, a short novel by Maria Edgeworth published in 1800, is often regarded as the first historical novel, the first regional novel in English, the first Anglo-Irish novel, the first Big House novel and the first saga novel. It is also widely regarded as the first novel to use the device of a narrator who is both unreliable and an observer of, rather than a player in, the actions he chronicles. Kirkpatrick suggests that it "both borrows from and originates a variety of literary genres and subgenres without neatly fitting into any one of them". William Butler Yeats pronounced Castle Rackrent "one of the most inspired chronicles written in English". Shortly before its publication, an introduction, glossary and footnotes, written in the voice of an English narrator, were added to the original text to blunt the… Read More

Jonathan Edwards was an American revivalist preacher, philosopher, and Congregationalist Protestant theologian. Like most of the Puritans, he held to the Reformed theology. Edwards is widely regarded as one of America's most important and original philosophical theologians. Recent studies have emphasized how thoroughly Edwards grounded his life's work on conceptions of beauty, harmony, and ethical fittingness, and how central The Enlightenment was to his mindset. Edwards played a critical role in shaping the First Great Awakening, and oversaw some of the first revivals in 1733–35 at his church in Northampton, Massachusetts
