Nach einer humanistischen Schulausbildung in Schulpforta begann Nay 1921 eine Buchhandelslehre, die er nach einem Jahr abbrach. Danach schlug er sich mit Gelegenheitsjobs durch und begann als Autodidakt mit der Malerei. Mit drei Bildern stellte er sich 1924 bei Karl Hofer vor und wurde von diesem im folgenden Jahr als Stipendiat in seine Malklasse an der Hochschule für bildende Künste in Berlin aufgenommen.
