Lund [Sweden], 7 January 1885. In English. 2 pp. 8 x 5 inches, integral leaf annotated by Rost, torn at centre fold (not affecting text), in good condition. “My own prospects here were too slow and too uncertain to reject a pretty good offer from the other side the Atlantic ...” August Hjalmar Edgren (1840 – 1903) was a Swedish-American linguist, professor, and author, as annotated by Rost on this letter: “Author of two Sanscrit grammars (one in Swedish, one in English) & translator of Sanscrit plays”. Edgren wrote numerous books, including a report of the author's travels in Mexico. In addition, the multi-lingual Edgren was the author of numerous books of grammar in several languages including German, French, Italian, Spanish and Sanskrit. Reinhold Rost (1822-1896), German born orientalist, secretary to the Royal Asiatic Society (1863-69), librarian at the India Office (1869-1893).

Description:
Middle Temple, 26 March 1799. 2 pp. 10 x 8 inches, with the address leaf, in good condition. Francis Henry Egerton, 8th Earl of Bridgewater (1756 –1829), known as Francis Egerton until 1823, was a noted British eccentric from the Egerton family and supporter of natural theology. According to the Parisian police, Egerton kept dogs and cats in his house which he dressed as ladies and gentlemen and would take them with him in his carriage. He bequeathed to the British Museum the valuable Egerton Manuscripts. The Rev. Thomas Maurice (1754-1824) was an oriental scholar and historian In 1791 he came before the public with two volumes of his Indian Antiquities: the rest were brought out at intervals. Maurice undertook a History of Hindostan, the three volumes of which, in quarto, were published in 1795, 1798, 1799, and a second edition appeared in 1821.

[1834]. 1 page 9 x 7 inches, with the address leaf, dusty but in good condition. Samuel Eglington (1785-1860), painter. “I have not received the cash for the prizes from the corporation yet, but will write you and remit it as soon as received.” David Roberts (1796-1864) he travelled in Spain and Tangiers in 1832. He returned at the end of 1833 with a supply of sketches that he elaborated into attractive and popular paintings. The British Institution exhibited his Interior of Seville Cathedral in 1834, and he sold it for £300.

Undated. 1 page 7½ x 6½ inches, integral address leaf, in good condition. Sir Henry Charles Englefield (1752-1822), Fellow of the Royal Society, scientific writer. In 1781 Englefield joined the Dilettanti Society and acted as its secretary for fourteen years. Besides his antiquarian studies, which resulted in many contributions to Archaeologia, he carried on research in chemistry, mathematics, astronomy, and geology. His "Discovery of a Lake from Madder" won for him the gold medal of the Society of Arts. Englefield was a close friend of Charles James Fox.

89 Great Russell Street, 23 August 1837. 2 pp. 8 x 5 inches, with the address leaf, toned. Dr John Epps (1805 – 1869), physician, phrenologist and homeopath. He was also a political activist, known as a champion of radical causes on which he preached, lectured and wrote in periodicals. In the later 1830s and early 1840s, the Anthropological Society of London (not to be confused with the Anthropological Society of London founded in 1863 by Richard Francis Burton and Dr. James Hunt) was a phrenological group holding meetings, associated with the Christian Physician and Anthropological Magazine edited by Epps. Epps was drawn to homoeopathy in about 1837 after reading the works of Dr Paul Francis Curie; his other major influence in homoeopathy was Samuel Hahnemann. He had a "very large homoeopathic practice, especially among the lower middle and lower classes of society". His patients included Charlotte and Emily Brontë.
