Risk. Gisèle d'Ailly is a Dutch artist who in the mid-1960s found and restored a small, nearly ruined monastery on the Aegean island of Paros. The monastery was isolated and spartan; yet it had a splendid location and there was much natural beauty to inspire her art. In the evenings, by candlelight, she wrote these poems about her work, her distant neighbors, and her life on the island.

Gisèle van Waterschoot van der Gracht was an extraordinary Dutch artists who lived on the Herengracht, in the center of Amsterdam. During the War she remained in The Netherlands and sheltered a number of Jewish friends, among them the 16-year old Claus Victor Bock. Afterwards she founded the Castrum Peregrini, a literary magazine. Its title was inspired by the Crusader Castle in the Holy Land which was never conquered, a reference to what had happened during the War. Her work as an artist includes innumerable wonderful paintings, stained glass windows, and tapestries. Her portraits of friends are particularly noteworthy.
