Dresden: Widukind Presse, 2003. Hanif Lehmann. A portfolio of 51 haunting original etchings by Hanif Lehmann printed on extremely fine, thick wove paper, with 12 pages of relevant text excerpts from Dante's Inferno in German, as translated by Stefan George. ONE OF ONLY FIVE COPIES OF THE LARGE FOLIO EDITION WITH ALL OF THE ETCHINGS SIGNED, JUSTIFIED, AND TITLED BY THE ARTIST (in the regular edition, limited to 25 copies, there are only 48 etchings, and they are not signed). Each of these five copies was printed for a specific collector, named in the printed justification: this copy was printed for a well-known Italian opera singer. The justification is also signed by the artist. The brooding portrait of Dante (the frontispiece) in this copy is the very first impression taken from the plate, and is justified as such ("Erstabzug"). Large folio (47.2 cm). Illustrated with 55 extremely disturbing original etchings, almost all full-page and hors-texte, by Hungarian-Jewish artist Laszlo Barta. Edition limited to 275 numbered copies of which this is one of 200 printed on fine Rives wove paper. Folio. Loose as issued in original wraps, with board chemise and slipcase. A tiny bit of faint foxing, else FINE AND BRIGHT. A rare and fascinating illustrated edition of the Inferno, likely made even rarer by the fact that both the illustrator and the publisher were Jewish, and it was issued in France on the eve of the Second World War.

Paris: Les Médecins Bibliophiles, 1950. Brunck de Freundeck. WITH AN ORIGINAL DRAWING. Brunck de Freundeck's finest (and final) livre de peintre, a bilingual (Italian-French) edition of La Vita Nuova, illustrated with 28 ORIGINAL ETCHINGS and many additional etchings after the artist in the text. Additionally, there are nine initials carefully gilded by hand in gold leaf. From a total edition of 150 numbered copies on fine Lana wove paper printed for Les Médecins Bibliophiles. Lucca: Riccomini, 1771. Two volumes, complete. An exhaustive history of the Gherardesca family, written in order to establish that family's nobility and rights. With the rare second volume, an extensive compendium of documentation with four engraved plates. The most famous member of the family in question, of course, was Ugolino della Gherardesca, a traitor immortalized by Dante in Inferno XXXII-III, where he eternally chews on the head of Archbishop Ruggieri, who had imprisoned him in a tower without food until he ate the bodies of his children. xv, 615; 1, 317, 18 + four engraved plates (one folding). Printed on fine laid paper. Elaborate engraved title-page in first volume. Large 4to. Attractively bound in vellum-backed decorated boards. Light wear to bindings and a little soiling to spines, but structurally perfect. Internally FINE AND BRIGHT, with no defects. RARE.

Detroit: printed by the artist, 1947. An original signed woodcut by Arthur C. Danto, executed in 1947 while he was an undergraduate at Wayne State University (he graduated in 1948). In this Expressionist image we see Joseph looking downcast in a dark cell, sitting on a bench with his ankle chained to the floor. 11 1/2" x 8 1/2" (block), 18" x 13" (sheet). Signed (A. Danto), dated ('47), titled (Joseph in Prison), and justified (3/25) in pencil. Only SIX IMPRESSIONS WERE ACTUALLY PRINTED, as indicated by the "6" at lower right (and confirmed by Danto). Monogrammed in the block. This is an extremely fine and rich impression, printed by the artist himself, on fine, thick, brownish-gray laid paper. An haunting collection of 10 large folio (45 x 30 cm) meditative chiaroscuro woodcuts by Darcy, each signed and justified by the artist, depicting churches destroyed during World War I. Darcy had made sketches on the spot and executed the woodcuts, employing Japanese techniques, soon afterwards. A manuscript justification, signed by Darcy, is laid in. Edition limited to 25 copies, all printed on fine laid Japanese bamboo paper. Three additional proofs laid in. Large folio. FINE AND BRIGHT.
