Near fine in a very good, price-clipped dust-jacket. A popular biography of the famous settler John Augustus Sutter (1803-1880), the German-Swiss colonizer who landed in California in 1839 and began to plan a fortified settlement in the area of what is now Sacramento. Gold was discovered in January 1848 at Sutter's Mill by his employee James W. Marshall, forever tying Sutter's name to the Gold Rush that quickly ensued. Scarce in the original jacket.

While this edition of Dana's biography of Sutter is not particularly scarce, copies with well-preserved dust-jackets are uncommon—and the jacket is an especially vibrant example of a pre-WWII jacket.

Swiss by birth, Frener (1821-1892) moved to Guatemala as an adult, where his career flourished. He produced coinage designs for several Central American nations as well as a variety of medals.

Dekesel V24, calling for a subsequent pagination not here present: the present work is complete, however, and Dekesel's collation is in at least one other respect incorrect for this edition. Ex Bibliotheca P.P.C. Lammens, with his engraved label bearing an ink notation, "nunc Pr. van Duyse." Pierre-Philippe-Constant Lammens (1762-1836) was a librarian and book collector affiliated with the University of Ghent. Prudens van Duyse (1804-1859) was the archivist of the city of Ghent.

2020. 2020 hardcover reprint in two volumes of the Istanbul, 2006 original. 4to, original matching green cloth, gilt; jackets. 662 pages; illustrated throughout and on 12 color plates. New. The standard work on the subject, and by far the most ambitious guide to this complex series. The original 2006 printing was a cumbersome single-volume paperback, making this hardcover edition in two volumes quite welcome.
