New York: New Directions, 1957. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near fine. Gilt-stamped parchment-covered boards in slip-case. With 2 signed lithographs and 2 unsigned, laid in. Most copies were issued with only one signed lithograph. One of 150 copies signed by the author and illustrator. This copy not numbered but instead dedicated to Edith Gregor Halpert who was an early dealer in modern art in New York and was Shahn's representative for some time. This would likely explain the inclusion of the extra lithographs included with this example. Book is near fine with a light one inch stain (possibly coffee) on the bottom of the spine. Slipcase with minor shelf wear, minor wrinkle to the top label, probably original. A nice copy with an extra signed lithograph.

Vol 2: Clamshell box portfolio containing a set of the 96 plates on japon, with 74 wood-engravings printed from the original wood-blocks and 66 wood-engravings, copper-engravings and dry-points printed by offset: and 9 copper engravings and one dry-point printed on hand-made paper from the original copper-plates. Plus a 7-page pictorial Index of Engravings, pamphlet stitched.. No. XXVII of CV. This is far and away the best presentation of the full range of Jones' engraving, a real labor of love.

Boston: Sever and Francis, 1864. Fourth Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. This is the 1864 two volume, large paper edition (high-quality laid paper), limited to 100 sets. Volume I is 559 pages. Volume 2 is 499 pages. (Both volumes 6.75 x 9.5 inches) Both volumes have been rebound in dark crimson buckram with gold lettering, as one might expect for a library, but not library copies. Bindings nice and bright and clean, very minor creases on spines, still fine. Full title pages in both volumes, no other preliminaries. Edges trimmed for the binding but retaining the large margins. Early owner's signature (O.W. Shaw) in pencil on the first volume title page. The contents of both volumes are fresh and clean, very high quality paper with no foxing, pages very flexible, not at all brittle. This is much finer printing than commonly seen in the period. A lovely period set.

Binding with a couple of small scratches and ordinary wear to the white leather, no bumps. Contents completely fine, original wrappers bound in, free of foxing. Top edge gilt, others deckled. 179 color woodcuts, including numerous initials, printed by Roger Lacourière. This is rare example of multi-color printing from single blocks. Printed on thick Arches paper and signed by Derain in the colophon page. A Century for the Century 45, The Artist and the Book 81, From Manet to Hockney 111, Skira 91. A beautiful book.
