Book has very minor water damage to the rear board but is in otherwise excellent condition; no writing or marks, two-tone illustrations throughout and full-color plates by Burkert. Minor red ink run from boards to page edges. Solid green endpapers. The dust jacket did its job protecting the book; it shows water damage and staining but is fully intact. One 1/2" chip from front lower edge, and light chipping at most corners. Protected in mylar. Detailed photos available upon request.

Striking jacket design is bright and attractive.

Presumed a first, as this one can't have had many printings! In very nice shape, a slight wrinkle to rear of jacket, and an almost unnoticeable 1" closed tear to rear of jacket near spine.

The author's first novel, this is a finely wrought story of a teenage girl, recovering from a shattering rape, and seduced by the thrill of the circus. First printing, near fine in a like jacket (small bends to jacket at extremeties). Sadly, the author died in a plane crash in 2003, robbing us of years of wonderfully crafted fiction

VG+ in a like jacket, in protective mylar. Jacket has a bit of wear at extremities, particularly head of spine, and a faint reddish discoloration to portion of the rear jacket. First edition stated

No jacket as issued, previous owner's small ex-libris stamp to front pastedown. Not an ex-library copy. Boards very slightly bowed, minimal wear to board edges. Very clean internally. Copy of 1969 church program from Saint Augustine's Church, Wilmette IL laid in.

Doubleday, 1954. Hardcover. Fine/Good. Book itself is in wonderful condition. A name is written very neatly on front board, almost unnoticeable. No markings, torn or bent pages, only the slightest hint of browning to the edges of the pages. Unsure of printing: the year "1954" appears on the title page, and the copyright page reads "Copyright, 1953, 1954". Dust jacket has some problems -- price-clipped, was torn in a diagonal across the front panel and repaired on the back side with a christmas-patterend scotch tape, I would guess sometime in the late 1950's, based on the tape itself. Other, more recent tears, one 1 1/2" closed tear at bottom fromt of spine, a few other 1/2" closed tears along top and bottom edges. Edgewear, soil and corner bumps, as to be expected on a 60-year-old book. Overall, extremely presentable, photos can be provided upon request.
