First edition of De Quincey's only original novel, in publisher's boards, a work in the spirit of the gothic novels he consumed as a child (he referred to Ann Radcliffe as "the great enchantress"), featuring a masquerade, murders, and the Thirty Years' War. While largely neglected at present, the novel had numerous notable admirers at release "[Coleridge], Emily Dickinson, Nathaniel Hawthorne and John Addington Symonds were among several others who expressed interest in the novel" Morrison, introduction to Klosterheim (2001). 8vo. Samuel Denne which appeared in Archaeologia, v11 (1792): 375-396. While a niche essay, on a niche topic, Charles Clarke's original essay and this response form part of the "first critical examination of the liturgical function and development of sedilia, and indeed the coining of their very name" and are thus of import in such studies. III gently sunned, printer's tickets of Benjamin Smith of Liverpool to front pastedowns, text and illustrations clean. An attractive example.. Triple decker first edition in book form in publisher's blind stamped, ribbed brown cloth with a central gilt device of a clock, spine elaborately stamped and titled in gilt. Includes The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge before they were separately issued. Profusely illustrated with frontispieces plus 194 wood-engraved illustrations, 154 by "Phiz" (Hablot Browne) and 39 by George Cattermole (though Smith notes some dispute about such numbers). Engraved frontispiece in each volume with tissue guard. Aberdeenshire, Scotland, 1832. A charming 1832 manuscript inventory of 74 law books, prepared just over a year before the owner, Capt. Dr. Arthur Dingwall Fordyce's, death. The manuscript lists the law books, number of volumes, printing location, and date of publication, as well as directions to his son, Alexander Fordyce, to give the books as gifts to his grandsons, Arthur Dingwall Fordyce and Arthur Farquhar. In 1834, Farquhar signed signifying receipt of his allocation of books. An interesting insight into the prominent Dingwall Fordyce family of Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

Good plus in publisher's red cloth with paper title panel to spine, with some wear to extremities, tanning of paper and wear, loss and age-darkening to paper spine panel.. From the library of George MacDonald with his bookplate to the front pastedown. In addition to MacDonald's ownership, this volume comes from the library of Maude Egerton King with her bookplate on the flyleaf. Ms. King was a friend of Greville Macdonald (and niece of George MacDonald by marriage), the son of George Macdonald, and it appears to have come into her possession in 1906, one year after George MacDonald's passing. Inscription to Ms. King, in what appears to be Greville MacDonald's hand, dated 1906. 12mo. 252pp.
