Else very good. Typescript sent to Dick Higgins of Something Else Press of Cage's brief essay on the composer Henry Cowell. New York: Henmar Press, 1960. First Edition. Wraps. Very good. Folio, 11 x 14". Ozalid or diazo score, mechanically reproduced from holograph. Folded in sixths, residue of a paper clip to top edge. Toning, as common to the format. Else clean and sound. Very good. [1], 2-8. Apparent publisher's proof of Cage's 1942 piece for voice and closed piano. This example is reproduced in large ozolid or diazo format, typically an architectural duplicating method but frequently utilized by composers of the period for reproduction from holograph, and a format Cage used throughout his career. The first of Cage’s songs inspired by James Joyce (who was an enormous influence on the composer), "The Wonderful Widow of Eighteen Springs" borrows its lyrics from the description of the sleeping Isobel in FINNEGANS WAKE: “how all so still she lay, neath of the whitethorn, child of tree, like some losthappy leaf, like blowing flower stilled.” According to Cage's included… Read more

np: np, [ca. 1952]. Very good. 4to. Brad-bound file, repurposed from offical Canadian military use, with printing to inside covers. [42] typescript pages, followed by 5 leaves with clippings mounted, and approximately 10 loose clippings laid in. All materials very good overall. Collected jokes, puns, satirical verse, and humorous anecdotes from the early 1950s, most uncredited and gathered from a variety of sources; perhaps used as an aide-memoire for a performer or public speaker. The opening excerpt sets the tone: "Men are what women marry. They have two feet, two hands (sometimes I think more) and sometimes two wives, but never more than one collar or idea at a time." Notably recurring joke subjects include wives and socialism, twin fountains of endless hilarity to the midcentury mind; military life, only scarcely less popular, with numerous insider anecdotes; Scotsmen; Russians ("Adam and Eve were Russians - They had no clothes, lived on an apple and they thought they… Read more
