This is an important and exceptionally scarce resource for a firsthand view of the difficulties settling in America that were faced by followers of the French politician, journalist and author, Étienne Cabet, whose theories for creating a communist utopia they sought to put into practice. Later edition of the famous narrative of Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca, first published in 1542. Cabeza de Vaca gives an account of his expedition to Florida in 1527, his capture by and escape from Indians on the Mississippi coast, and his later overland journey across Texas before finally making his way back to Spanish controlled lands in Mexico. The original work was the first on Texas, and the first American travel account. A foundation work on Texas and the Southwest. The second part describes his career as governor of La Plata in South America

A rare account of a grisly incident in the fur trade in Northwestern Canada, in which Baptiste Cadien, a half Indian serving as an interpreter for the Hudson's Bay Company at Fort Norman, murdered half a dozen Hare Indians, and wounded several others in 1835. The crime took place in what is now Alberta province, somewhere north of modern-day Edmonton, not far from the Lesser Slave Lake. Cadien was accompanied by two other men, Creole Lagrisse, who participated in the murders once they began, and Baptiste Jourdain, upon whose testimony Cadien was convicted. Several sensationalized contemporary account of the killings asserted a romantic motivation for the killings, by which Cadien sought revenge for losing a paramour back to her husband of another tribe. Cadillac, the key figure in the founding of Detroit in 1701, attempts to draw a comprehensive picture of the tribes living in the Great Lakes and upper Mississippi Valley regions. Liette's memoirs focus specifically on the Illinois Indians, and were first published in English in Volume XXIII of the Illinois Historical Collections as "Memoir of De Gannes Concerning the Illinois Country," due to the copyist (De Gannes)'s signature at the end of the original manuscript. Contemporary ownership signature on front wrapper and titlepage. Internally clean. Good. James Caird (1816-92) was an agriculturalist and member of the British Parliament. This volume was the result of a tour he undertook in 1859 through Canada and the American Midwest. Much of the volume is devoted to Illinois, though Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ohio receive a fairly thorough treatment. The portion on Canada provoked some resentment. HOWES C19. SABIN 9854

First American edition of this work by the Spanish Jesuit, Calatayud, containing theological advice for priests. The work was first published in separate editions in Pamplona and Valencia in 1736. This Lima edition includes a preface by Pedro Antonio, Archbishop of Lima, outlining the reasons for reprinting the text, and reprints the original dedication and various approvals from the earlier editions. The work consists of six discourses intended to guide priests in their ministerial works. More a philosophical work than a practical guide, Calatayud explores the moral and religious obligations which priests have to those they serve and to themselves. Addressed to the Viceroy and Audiencia of Peru, the work discusses whether slavery of conquered Indians is just or not, reviewing arguments on both sides of the question. Calderón approaches the problem in an intriguing manner by providing separate justifications, each in its own individual section of the text, for enslaving the Indians from the various points of view of the King, the Kingdom, and the Church. Nathanael Greene, with descriptions of many of the major battles of the Revolution, in which Greene played a significant role. Most notably, Greene was instrumental in wearing down Cornwallis's superior forces in the southern theater through a series of guerilla encounters. The folding facsimiles here reproduce two letters dated in 1779: the first, a letter from Greene to John Jay regarding positive Congressional acknowledgement of Greene's activities as quartermaster general of the Continental Army, and the second, a letter from George Washington to Greene pleading for a penknife during Greene's stint in the same position. The states are to be named California, Colorado, and Shasta. The state of California is to occupy the territory between the forty-second and thirty-fifth parallels; Colorado is to exist roughly between the mouth of the Pajaro River and the Sierra Nevadas, extending south to Mexico; Shasta is to be comprised of the remaining territory. The purpose of the proposed division was twofold: it would be far easier to collect revenue from California's booming population if the territory had three separate administrative governments; and secondly, California's tremendous coastline was represented in Congress by only two senators, in contrast to the ten senators representing the eastern coastal states. A group of six early stereoscopic views of California, depicting Yosemite, an early drive-through sequoia in Mariposa Grove, the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and Ellwood Ranch. These early stereoviews (or stereocards) each consist of two nearly identical photographs which, when viewed through a stereoscope, produce the illusion of depth. Stereocards enjoyed a meteoric rise to popularity after being featured in London's Great Exhibition of 1851, and many photographers rushed to capture new scenes for the medium. The first two stereo cards in this grouping were published by Underwood & Underwood, a company from Kansas that became the largest publisher of stereoviews in the world. First Spanish edition of this history of early missionary activities of the Spanish in Arizona and California, mainly dealing with the period from Kino and Salviaterra through the establishment of the missions. This is the second edition overall, translated by German Madrid y Ormaechea from the French, HISTOIRE CHRÉTIENNE DE LA CALIFORNIE (Plancy, 1851). The identity of the author, Madame la Comtesse de***, remains unknown. Howes collates this incorrectly, calling for 238 pages and five plates. A vitriolic political attack from the midst of Oakland, California's first ever recall election. The recall was initiated by the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) and the Socialist party, who charged incumbent mayor Frank K. Mott ("the Mayor Who Built Oakland") and his administration with misuse of the waterfront, misappropriation of city funds, and "that the police have forcibly prevented the right of free speech and public assembly," this shortly after Oakland police had dispersed a Socialist meeting, which some suspected to be the inciting event of the recall (THE OAKLAND TRIBUNE, March 11, 1912). This broadside, likely circulated by the III, quotes an almost certainly falsified speech by W.J. The text touts the scenery, the relatively constant and pleasant temperature, and local attractions such as the Carmel Mission, Cypress Point, and the Hotel Del Monte. The map on the rear wrapper shows the vicinity of Monterey, including the route of the Southern Pacific Railroad line. The inside of the front and rear wrappers contain ads for the Hotel Del Monte, which presumably was the firm that issued this publication. Not in Cowan.
