Albumen print, 8 x 10 Ā½ inches. A fine 19th century photograph of the Zhengyang Gate, one of the "nine great gates" of ancient Peking, taken from on top of the Tartar Wall. This is a fine early photograph of the Zhengyang Gate, one of the "nine great gates" of ancient Peking, taken from an exceptional vantage point. The Zhengyang Gate was located at the front entrance of the Forbidden City during the Ming and Qing Dynasties and is commonly referred to as the Front Gate. The "nine great gates" of Peking were built in the reign of Ming Emperor Yongle. This photograph taken from on top of the Tartar Wall offers a dramatic view of the dynamic daily life at one of great gates of Peking during late Imperial China. The gate was bustling with carts and the constant flow of traffic from local officials and merchants with their retinues.

FIRST EDITION of "the first English textbook on geometrical land-measurement and surveying" (Buisseret, Monarchs, Ministers, and Maps). The book focused on practical methods calculating everything from the amount of stone needed to pave a chamber floor to the size of a pasture or field" marking "the beginning of a new interest in measuring not just the assets of the land, but the land itself" (D. K. Smith, Cartographic Imagination in Early Modern England). In this landmark in the history of surveying, Richard Benese described for the first time in English how to calculate the area of a field or an entire estate. Noting that sellers tended to exaggerate the size of a property whereas buyers were inclined to underestimate it, he advised the surveyor to approach the task in a careful and methodical manner: "When ye shall measure a piece of any land ye shall go about the boundes of it once or twice, and [then] consider well by viewing it whether ye may measure it in one parcel wholly altogether or else in two or ... • Book condition: Very Good

26 photographs. Various processes. Many of the portraits were taken at the studios of the photographers themselves. This superb collection of photographs of photographers documents the spread of photography from its inventor Daguerre through the art's earliest practitioners in the United States and ultimately to the great photographers of the Civil War and the American West. The collection begins with a portrait of Louis Daguerre. Portraits of American photographic pioneers include Samuel Morse, who brought Daguerre's process to America, and John William Draper, the American scientist who helped to perfect it. Mathew Brady, greatest of all 19th-century American photographers, is represented by a fine CDV portrait and an image from the end of the war in which Brady inserts himself into a group portrait of U.S. Grant's staff. Brady trained photography giants Alexander Gardner and Timothy O'Sullivan, both of whom are represented with stunning portraits. Finally, the collection includes runs of portraits of photo ... A GREAT ELIZABETH BARRETT BARRETT PRESENTATION COPY. Turn of the century full navy morocco gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Original cloth bound in at the end. A near fine copy in a lovely binding. FIRST EDITION of the book that brought Barrett fame. Presentation copy, inscribed by Elizabeth Barrett, "To Miss Heard, with the author's regards, August 1844." In the early 1830s, during the period of her infatuation with the blind classicist Hugh Stuart Boyd, Elizabeth jealously railed against various "young ladies in the neighbourhood [who] seem to me in the habit of going to see that poor man." In an 1831 diary entry, Barrett singled out Miss Heard: "The society of that Miss Hurd [i.e. Heard] is as much valued as mineā€“as much! At least as much" (Forster, Elizabeth Barrett Browning: The Life and Loves of a Poet, pp. 56-57). Two of the poems in this volume were inspired by Boyd, whose first reaction was to deprecate the ABAB rhyme scheme of "Wine of Cyprus," which was addressed to Boyd. Browning wrote bac ... Read more

Two volumes. Original purple-brown cloth. Folding map as frontispiece to Volume I, plate of the JuJu House as frontispiece to Volume II. Spines a touch sunned, light wear, but an excellent set. First edition. This is Burton's first book on his years in West Africa including detailed accounts of his amazing adventures inland. "Newly married and needing employment, Burton approached the Foreign Office for a consular position, hoping for the post at Damascus. Instead, he was offered the consulship at Fernando Po, a small, unhealthy island in the Bight of Biafra on the west African coast. When he accepted the position on 27 March 1861 he requested to retain his commission in the Bombay army, but he was struck from the list, thereby losing not only his half pay but also any prospect of a pension or sale of his commission, an action about which he always complained bitterly. Burton did not permit Isabel to accompany him to Fernando Po, which he described as 'the very abomination of desolation'. He slipped away from ... Read more
