London: Printed for John Noon 1755, 1755. First edition. 8vo. 210x125mm. pp. xxxi, [9], 464, 469-527 [1, adverts]. Collates complete. Contemporary calf, rebacked, dark green morocco label to spine, lettered in gilt. Gilt double fillet and blind tooling to borders of covers. Rubbing and wear to corners and edges of covers. Some damp-staining internally with but overall a very good copy. A contemporary owner has inscribed four pages of excerpts from a review notice in the Monthly Review (volume 13, dated 1755). There are some additional notes in the same hand. This book was originally issued (also in 1755) as "Memoirs of Several Ladies of Great Britain" and both title pages are present. It is hard to think of a book where the main title and the sub-titles appear to have so little to connect them. Anyone picking up this book hoping for some good biographical yarns will be disappointed. The title is "clickbait" suggesting lots of juicy tales but mainly offering obscure theological obsessions (albeit… Read More

Description:
London: Printed by T.Cope and published by the author 1816, 1816. Second edition. Ten volumes. 4to. 269x208mm. Letterpress title page is present in volume one only, as usual and the engraved half title is present in all volumes. 664 plates, printed in colour with some hand colouring. The plates are in superb condition, the colours bright and fresh. Many, particularly in the last four volumes are folding. There is some foxing to the text leaves but overall the condition is excellent. Bound in contemporary brown half calf with marbled paper covered boards. Spine decorated and lettered in gilt, the head of the spines and the top compartment of some of the volumes have been neatly repaired. A very handsome set of one of the nineteenth century's most important botanical works. Henry Cranke Andrews (1758/9 - 1835) published his first botanical prints in 1794 and between 1797 and 1814, he issued The Botanists' Repository for New and Rare Plants in monthly parts. Joints a little worn and split at the foot of the spine at the lower cover. Chipping to head and foot of spine. Paper label to spine printed with the title "The Companion". Hinges are worn and splitting in places and there is some slight soiling but overall it is in good condition. The text is very clear and although it appears to have been written by more than one hand, the exceptionally neat italic style is uniform throughout. The contributors are referred to only by their initials (R, E, J.D. and V, although one is called "Theta"). On the title page is the epigraph "The first quality in a Companion is Truth" - Sir William Temple. This is printed on a small piece of paper and pasted onto the leaf. n.p n.p c1820s, 1820. A set of six hand-coloured lithographs on card showing the hand signals made to communicate from a distance when game shooting. Mounted on linen with two backed with marbled card so that these form the covers when folded. The folded set is housed in a marbled paper covered card slip-case. Each card measures 66x132mm and unfolded the whole is 200x265mm. The prints are in superb condition, with the colours particularly fresh and bright. They are undated but the clothes are clearly of the Regency period and much is made of the newly fashionable top hat which was the headwear of choice for the sporting gentleman for most of the nineteenth century. In part they are instructional, showing how to signal when a dog is required or when you want someone to "bring the powder and shot" but there is a gently humorous element as well particularly in the last card showing our hero holding his gun aloft. Balancing on the end of the barrels is his top hat. This elaborate manoeuvre means, we are… Read More

London: Printed for John Morphew. 1713. First and only edition. 8vo in 4s. 180x115mm. pp. 23, [1]. In modern pink wrappers. Some slight foxing and staining to head of first gathering but overall a very good copy. Although published anonymously, this Tory response to Robert Hush's (i.e. Robert Walpole's) pamphlet The present state of fairy-land is recognised as the work of the doctor and satirist William Wagstaffe who moved in the same political and literary circles as Swift and John Arbuthnot. This 1713 exchange of pamphlets was a skirmish in the propaganda battle between Whigs and Tories over British involvement in the War of the Spanish Succession. Walpole had criticised the Tory attempt to secure a peace settlement with France (which he called Slave-onia). This reply is a splendidly eighteenth century mix of obscure circumlocution and low insult. ESTC: T99516

Cheltenham: Printed by S.Y.Griffith for Messrs Rivingtons 1824, 1824. First (and apparently only) edition. 8vo. 180x115mm. pp. xiv, [2], 304. Modern brown cloth, lettered in gilt to spine. Internally very good with some toning to edges. Ex-library stamp on verso of title page. A nice copy of this collection of thirty-eight short essays on a variety of subjects including Materialism, Byron's Cain, A Mystery, Bulls, Fortune Telling, Sleep, Dreams, Atheism, Light, Sound, the Employment of Children in Churches, the Language of Birds and Nonentity of Matter. An odd book. We have been unable to trace the identity of the author. It appears in this one edition only. There is no obvious theme linking the thirty-eight essays (although the metaphysical, the mystical and the ethereal are pre-occupations) and it seems that the pieces were written purely for this collection as they exist nowhere else. We are not alone in being perplexed. The Monthly Review of September to December 1824 said of it: "There is a… Read More

Original grey paper covered boards, original label to spine. Tear to head of spine, rubbing to joints and corners of boards. Internally very good, a few pencil underlinings and marginal annotations and some pages unopened and overall a nice copy of a rare work located by Worldcat in seven UK libraries and none in the US. Henry Kirke White had ambitions to enter the sacred ministry and spent a year studying with a priest in Lincolnshire before entering Cambridge. Southey said of him that never was there a "devouter christian" and that "of his fervent piety, his letters, his prayers, and his hymns, will afford ample and interesting proofs".
