L'homme et l'enfant réunit des images du passé et un journal du douloureux présent que traversait alors Arthur Adamov. On pourra y découvrir des visages qu'Adamov a aimés, les uns obscurs, d'autres reconnaissables, comme ceux d'Antonin Artaud, d'André Gide, de Roger Gilbert-Lecomte. Adamov s'interroge avec obstination sur sa souffrance et sur lui-même, mais il refuse de composer une image cohérente de son existence. C'est un livre d'interrogation où la phrase devient souvent un cri, et où ce qui est dit suggère au lieu d'expliquer.
