Description:
This is the guy Norman Mailer got out of prison to finish writing a book, who subsequently killed someone in a botched gas station robbery and went back to prison, leaving Mailer still at large.

And this is that book. Regardless, Abbott is a genuinely skilled writer, and Belly of the Beast is worth reading on its own merits. And if you want a copy, this is the one you want.

Book is in as-new bookstore condition except for a hint of sunning, showing its age, on the top and bottom edges of the front and back boards. There are no other flaws to report for the book -- and you can see from my other listings that I frickin' over-report frickin' everything. DJ is similarly nice except for a couple of creases front and back, a small closed tear on the right front edge and tiny nicks on the corner of the spine. All of these are invisible from a few feet away with the book cozened in its clear archival cover. Hint of mild foxing at top of jacket flaps, e.g. the upper right corner of the front flap where the… Read More

Description:
This is a copy of the first US trade edition of Rackham's Andersen's Fairy Tales, published by David McKay & Co. using the sheets, printed in England, of the first UK trade -- that is, the editions are identical except that Harrap gilt-stamped 'David McKay' on the bottom spine. There have been innumerable small-format reprints of the book, generally missing some of its 12 full-page color plates and most of its charm, leaving a choice between a copy of this first trade edition or the deluxe limited vellum edition of 525 numbered copies which neither of us can afford.

The only other decision to make is whether to go for one of the strangely numerous copies of this edition that still have their original dust jacket and (sometimes) original gift box. I don't know where all these jackets and gift boxes suddenly started coming from, but I'm not ready to say I'm suspicious yet. Those are also expensive, and this one isn't cheap, but at least the price won't give you a nosebleed. I may also have a cheaper,… Read More

Description:
This is a copy of the first UK trade edition of Arthur Rackham's treatment of Andersen's Fairy Tales. Quarto in red cloth, pictorial gilt lettering and art by Rackham on front and spine, pictorial endpapers, gilt top. The 12 full page color plates have with printed tissue guards. Water stains on front and back boards, spine slightly sunned with darkened gilt. Binding is tight, square and straight. Interior VG+ with only dots of foxing on the reverse of the frontis title page and several other interior pages. Printed endpapers are present and entire, but faded, especially at recto. Verso ffep has a continuation of the front water stain on its edge. Stain does not continue past that page. I'm being meticulous in describing the book's condition -- the front board water stain and spine gilt are the only things that would bother a reasonable person.

Description:
New York: Crescent Books, 1981. 1990 Revised Edition. Hardcover. As New/as new. Very large, lavishly illustrated volume on military aircraft, a standard reference guide eye-catching enough to double as a coffee-table book. This is basically a new copy, with the jacket looking more casual, less starched and crisply folded than brand-new, after sitting on a quiet shelf for years, but not being worn to a notable degree. The price is suitably tamped down a bit. This is one of those books where kicked-around and cosmetically damaged copies are cheap and easily available, but nice ones are hard to find. One of the reasons, as is often the case, is the weight, and the ease at which 5 1/2 pounds of book can mess up a paper dust jacket. This one comes in a Mylar sleeve, fastened in with low-tack archival tape and fitted with corner guards -- all removable for the purist or the aviation buff who likes to live dangerously.
