Herbert Press, London, second edition, 1984. Cloth, large 4to, 291 x 216 mm,. 271 pp, over 460 illustrations (36 in colour). From the blurb: "In the first part of the book the author describes the conflict of ideas in book design since the 1880s, firstly between the Art Nouveau movement and the followers of William Morris and then in the 1920s between the work of the Bauhaus as the protagonists of Die Neue Typographie in Germany and the supporters of the renaissance of a classical style in printing in England and the United States. The greater part of the book is taken up with book illustration, beginning with the influence of French editions de luxe on American and British illustrated books, showing the work of such artists as Bonnard, Segonzac, Dufy and Leger. A chapter on German Expressionism introduces the work of Slevogt, Kokoschka, Georg Grosz and Paul Klee, together with the Surrealist book illustrations of Max Ernst and his followers. Description:
W. & G. Foyle, London, first edition, 1909. Cloth, top edge gilt, 8vo, 25 cm,. xv, 434 pp, 25 plates. Prideaux's work focusses almost exclusively on English books, with aquatint illustrations, published between 1775 and 1830. From a contemporary review of the first edition:" Miss Prideaux writes an excellent style, and I remember no book on any branch of engraving which explains so intelligently the connection of the art with all the social conditions of the period in which it arose. She has not merely looked at the illustrations, but has read the books in which they appeared. Her chapters on the rise of water-colour painting in England, on topographical draughtsmanship, on the water-colour painters as teachers and their drawing-books, on the eighteenth century fondness for English topography and the somewhat later passion for books on foreign travel, are all most interesting.. Paul Harris Publishing, Edinburgh, 1979 reprint of 1966 first edition. Cloth, 8vo, 25 cm,. 176 pp, plates. From the blurb: "This is the long-awaited reprint of the only comprehensive study of the art nouveau book. Copies of the first edition of this definitive book are themselves now collectors' items and it is an important reference source for students and enthusiasts of the 1890s and early 1900s. This, the time of art nouveau and Arts and Crafts, the time when such presses as William Morris's Kelmscott Press and Charles Ricketts's Vale Press were flourishing and books and magazines were decorated by illustrators like Beardsley, Housman, Arthur Rackham and Jessie M. King, is the subject of John Russell Taylor's authoritative study. In it the author traces the rise of the art nouveau movement in Britain, suggesting a number of ways in which definitions of the style based primarily on Continental examples have obscured its true course and nature, and linking it with the… Read More

V&A Publications, London, first edition, 2001. Cloth, 4to,. 208 pp, 100 colour ills. From the blurb: "Illuminated Manuscripts, comics, fine bindings, the classics of children's literature, artists' books and their working documents - these are just some of the items to be found in the National Art Library at the V & A. This fascinating and attractive volume explores the ways in which books represent art and literature, and how the marriage of word and image can create a work of art in its own right. In a series of thematic chapters, the authors draw on their wide-ranging expertise to look at the Library's major holdings, and in the process illustrate the main aspects of book design and production over the centuries. With medieval books of hours sitting alongside contemporary paperback novels, the choice is wonderfully varied, from Leonardo da Vinci to Sir Eduardo Paolozzi, Joan of Arc to Judge Dredd, Aesop to Charles Dickens, and Babar the Elephant to Ian Fleming. The superb… Read More
