Sack Amusement. No binding. Very Good+. [Dallas]: Sack Amusement Enterprises, [1946]. Vintage original 11 x 14" (28 x 36 cm.) lobby card. There is minor damage to the extreme left bottom of the border art, overall very good+. One of a series of films directed in the 1940s by Spencer Williams, who was one of a small number of African Americans then working as a director. Any advertising paper from this film is extremely scarce.

Martha Raye, who did her own stunts in a raucously entertaining number, was ingeniously cast as W. C. Fields' daughter (in his last film for Paramount). Everyone shone in their musical moments in a story which concerned a race between two ocean liners, from which the new S. S. Gigantic had a big radio broadcast emitting (you see, the turbine engine worked on radio waves is the explanation!). Fields plays T. Fine.One of Douglas Fairbanks' best roles and one of the most memorable silent films which set the standard for all pirate epics to follow. Story of a nobleman who vows to avenge his father's death by the hands of pirates. He infiltrates their band and becomes known as the black pirate. Dove appears at left with Fairbanks, and a sword duel is presented within the shape of the pirate ship behind. The star, the title, and the fact that it is ""Photographed in Technicolor"" is all that is needed to promote this epic.

No binding. Very Good. Fine Art Print Vintage original 11 x 14"" (28 x 35 cm.) lobby card, USA. Alan Ladd, Veronica Lake, William Bendix, Howard Da Silva, dir: George Marshall; Paramount. One of the finest classic film noir titles and written by the master of the genre, Raymond Chandler. The story involved a war vet who returns home to see his wife with another man. She is murdered and he is the prime suspect. The Blue Dahlia is a nightclub where much of the action takes place. Chandler initially had the returning vet (Bendix) as the murderer, but the patriotic atmosphere of the time would not permit a war vet to be seen in that light, so he had to rewrite the story and character. Alan Ladd (as Johnny Morrison) addresses Doris Dowling (as Helen Morrison) and her guests at a cocktail party. Four pin holes at top center blank white margin, two at top right corner. Slight soil at bottom left corner and in border, NEAR FINE.

There is one small piece of tape on back of one corner, and remnants of tape left in other corners, very good.A gaggle of 1940s sweater girls gather around Prof. Frederick Brenner, alias Karl Wagner (Bela Lugosi), who teaches them psychology. But this is just one of his faces, as he also plays a kindly character who runs a night time soup kitchen in the Bowery. The soup kitchen, however, is really a front for his role as a crime boss and uses the mission to recruit down-and-out people, including convicts, into his racket. When things get out of hand in a series of robberies and murders, he kills his henchmen -- who turn into zombies in the cellar of the soup kitchen.

Jean Seberg, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Henri-Jacques Huet, Lilliane Dreyfus, dir: Jean-Luc Goddard; Les Productions Georges de Beauregard/SNC. Card depicts a portrait of Jean Seberg as Patricia Fanchini and Jean-Paul Belmondo as Michel Poiccard for this original 1961 card for the American subtitled release through Films Around the World. The story of a sociopath who steals a car and impulsively murders the policeman who pursues him. Before fleeing to Italy, he involves an American girl in his plight to recover a debt and involves her in his escape, and at the same time falling in love with her while oblivious to the media attention he has gained and the dragnet closing in on him. It is the stylistic presentation, revolutionary in its time (in hand held camera photography, jump cuts and editing), which even to this day make the film thrilling -- as do the performances by the two leads, FINE.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. No binding. Just About Fine. [Hollywood]: MGM, 1953. Vintage original 11 x 14" (28 x 36 cm.) lobby card no. 4, JUST ABOUT FINE. Dorothy Dandridge's first starring role in a feature film, about a schoolteacher trying to help a wayward student. Harry Belafonte co-starred in his movie debut.

No binding. Fine. Fine Art Print Vintage original 11 x 14" (28 x 35 cm.) lobby card, USA. Warner Baxter, Myrna Loy, Walter Connolly, Helen Vinson, dir: Frank Capra; Columbia. Fine.Myrna Loy and Warner Baxter are elegant on this card for the film which was publicized as "the comedy successor to IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT". Director Capra and writer Robert Riskin joined forces once more. This involved a runaway heiress as well, who is involved with her brother-in-law who devotes his life to racing horses, including the one he owns named Broadway Bill.Appealing colors highlight this card.

Vintage original 11 x 14" (28 x 36 cm.) lobby card, three words written on back in area of blank left margin do not show through, VERY GOOD or better. Director Shirley Clarke's second feature, about African American teenagers involved in gang life in Harlem. This is the single most iconic image from this harsh, semi-documentary film.

There has been some minor touch-up to blank margins to address what were some scattered stains, overall very good+.This scarce lobby card is arguably the single most sought after and desirable of all 1940s pin-up cards, and it is a very difficult piece to find.

Dewey ""Pigmeat"" Markham, John Murray, Percy Verwayen, David Bethea, dir: Sam Newfield; Toddy Pictures. Comedy horror story which is considered a lost film. Story concerned the escapades of Pigmeat and Shorty and their avoidance of paying their rent when, out of the blue, they both inherit money and a house -- the stipulation is that they must spend one night alone in that house, which is most definitely haunted. There were songs included: ""Take Me"", ""Hard Luck Blues"" and ""A Brown Skin Gal is the Best Gal After All"". Star Pigmeat Markham (1904-1981) was a comedian, singer, dancer, and actor, who spent most of his life performing on the ""chitlin' circuit"" of black vaudeville theaters and night clubs. The white audience discovered him in the 1960s after he performed his famous ""Heyeah come da judge"" routine on the NBC show LAUGH-IN. An unusual morality film, in which a young woman is tempted by the Devil, but righteousness wins out in the end. The film was promoted as having "an all-colored cast of 30 and a choir of 40." That choir interspersed the dramatic sequences with gospel numbers. This card portrays the heroine caught between Satan and God. Richards 432.

Twentieth Century Fox. No binding. Near Fine. [Hollywood]: Twentieth Century Fox, 1935. Vintage original 11 x 14" (28 x 36 cm.) lobby card, NEAR FINE. The legendary Bill Robinson, most of whose film work was done at Fox in the 1930s, was only seventh-billed in this Will Rogers horse racing film. And this is the one card which shows him dancing.

Sack. No binding. Very Good-. [Dallas: Sack Attractions, 1943]. Vintage original 11 x 14" (28 x 36 cm.) lobby card, the card appears at one time to have been mounted in an album, and there are glue stains on the verso, most of which do not show through with a smudge on lower right and a little chipping and other signs of light use, VERY GOOD-. Dallas-based Sack was a major producer and distributor of independent African American films in the period before, during, and after World War II. In 1939, an African American boxing drama, KEEP PUNCHING, was released. This short film contains musical numbers from it (and very likely unused footage as well). This card is for one of this film's rather elaborate numbers. Vintage paper from both this film and its 1939 antecedent are exceedingly scarce.

Warner Brothers. No binding. Fine. James Ellroy (source) [Burbank, CA]: Warner Brothers, 1997. Set of eight (8) vintage original 11 x 14" (28 x 36 cm.) lobby cards, fine. A brilliant set of color images from director Curtis Hanson's definitive adaptation of James Ellroy's trenchant novel. This film is a hallmark masterpiece of neo noir cinema. It is not easy to find a complete set of all eight lobby cards, and unusually so to find them in pristine condition.

A Black cast film about a young African American who continues his family's tradition of military service when he is drafted into the United States Army during World War II. Despite complications that arise during his basic training, including his jealousy following his girlfriend's flirtatious attention to his sergeant, the young soldier becomes a hero when he locates Japanese saboteurs operating a radio station outside of his military base. Director Spencer Williams directed a number of Black cast independent films during and after World War II, including this one.

No binding. Fine. Fine Art Print.Vintage original 11 x 14" (28 x 35 cm.) lobby card, USA. Greta Garbo, Ramon Novarro, Lionel Barrymore, Lewis Stone, Karen Morley, dir: George Fitzmaurice; MGM. One minor crease in blank corner, fine.One of the finest and most legendary of the Greta Garbo films. Today, just the images of Garbo in her role of the infamous German spy who ended up in front of a firing squad for her work are iconic. Even in the less restrictive pre-Code days, censors demanded cuts in the script and even in the finished film. Stills of Garbo in a see-through gown exist, yet the scene is no longer in the film. So popular was the film and Garbo -- particularly in the foreign markets -- that MGM attempted to re-release the film in 1936, but was not given approval; they had to wait three years before the Hays Office would approve the re-release, in 1939.
