Two of the three have studio text affixed on verso, JUST ABOUT FINE.Director William Dieterle's adaptation of the Stephen Vincent Benet short story "The Devil and Daniel Webster". One photo is a portrait of Walter Huston, who plays "Scratch" (the Devil), another is of Edward Arnold as Daniel Webster, and the third shows in foreground James Craig and Anne Shirley as Jabez and Mary Stone, in this retelling of the Faust legend.

Greta Garbo, Fredric March, Freddie Bartholomew, Maureen O'Sullivan, May Robson, Basil Rathbone, Reginald Owen, dir: Clarence Brown: MGM. Unrestored poster has some minor stains, chips, and tack holes, but colors are bright, and poster is overall very pleasing to look at, near fine.Based on Tolstoy's novel, Greta Garbo's favorite writer Salka Viertel adapted the book along with S.N. Behrman and Clemence Dane, for what many feel is the definitive film version. Anna must come to terms with the social repercussions when she allows herself to fall in love while married and with a child.
Technical aspects of this film were far advanced and Garbo's understated performance earned her the New York Film Critics Award for Best Actress. Cedric Gibbons designed the impeccable period sets. Child actor Freddie Bartholomew was prominently billed on this poster.

Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison's novels are a rich part of contemporary American literature, but represent a daunting task for any film maker looking to adapt them to the screen. Nonetheless, Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme threw himself into this complex project, with a top-rank cast that included Oprah Winfrey (who also served as one of the movie's producers), Danny Glover and Thandie Newton. Cards were printed on a linen-textured paper stock, which gives them an antiqued look, FINE.

Vintage original pressbook, printed wrappers, 15 x 12 1/4" (38 x 31 cm.), 20 pp., JUST ABOUT FINE. Kenneth Fearing's classic crime novel was the basis for this film noir thriller directed by John Farrow and starring Ray Milland, Maureen O'Sullivan, and Charles Laughton -- a story of a ruthless magazine publisher who commits murder and then frames his lead editor for it.

Raymond Chandler (screenplay) [Hollywood]: Paramount Pictures, 1946. Vintage original pressbook, 15 x 12 1/2" (38 x 32 cm.), 24 pp. Folded once (as issued), printed wrappers, NEAR FINE.Producer John Houseman had to keep screenwriter Raymond Chandler equipped with cases of expensive scotch while Chandler was writing this screenplay. Although Chandler did work on other screenplays in the 40s and early-50s, all the other efforts were collaborations, and this was Chandler's only solo screenwriting effort, for this now classic film noir which starred Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake.It is a story of a returning war veteran who discovers his wife is having an affair, and then finds her murdered, with him as the lead suspect.

Leonore Coffee collaborated with Albert Lewin on this adaptation from a novel by Charles Gilman Norris. With a clear focus on womens' issues, the film focuses on two sisters: one marries and has several children, the other tries to make her way as a stenographer.

The story of an elderly gentlemen in 16th century Spain who goes mad after reading too much about chivalry, claims himself a knight and sets out with a small entourage to revive that age. With songs, this version of the famous tale would later be realized as the musical MAN OF LA MANCHA. Three versions were filmed for 3 different languages -- English, French and German -- with the famous Russian-born opera singer Feodor Chaliapin playing in all three versions, resulting in three somewhat different films. This work is one of the only times Chaliapin was captured on film. He is known to have been the first opera singer to concern himself with a believably-acted presentation of character. Paper filing label across spine, NEAR FINE.Second revision draft script of this early form of an adaptation by Gore Vidal to television of Lucian Truscott's novel. In its present state, the script would translate into a two-hour television film.Truscott's novel, set at West Point at the time of the Vietnam War, reportedly based it on fact. The completed film, when screened on television, dealt with homophobia (both external and internalized) and it was very strong stuff in the mid-1980s, at the height of the Reagan era. The film was clearly troubling to some contemporary critics, but it nonetheless was nominated for three Emmy Awards.A very interesting example of Vidal's work as a screenwriter, especially because of the film's LGBTQ subject matter.

Warner Brothers. No binding. Just About Fine. [Los Angeles: Warner Brothers, 1941]. Vintage original 11 x 14" (28 x 35 cm.) black-and-white double weight glossy silver gelatin print photo. Print is borderless, there is one stain on Bogart's shoulder at far right. Just about fine.
Humphrey Bogart toiled on screen for nearly 10 years in all kinds of supporting and second-billed roles, with an occasional lead in a B film. High Sierra's Roy "Mad Dog" Earle was the role which catapulted Humphrey Bogart to first-billed star status. The following year he was considered a romantic lead as well. He excelled in this emotionally charged character, sprung out of prison and hiding from the authorities in the Sierra mountains.
Seldom were guns allowed in publicity stills, moreso with them being pointed at the viewer; this portrait violates both counts. This oversized print came from the files of the Photoplay magazine library and is ink stamped as such three times on the verso. Photo coded HB 238.

Folded, fine.Popular 1960s crime/espionage thriller based on The IPCRESS File by Len Deighton and set and filmed in London, touching upon the local political atmosphere at the time. Michael Caine played Harry Palmer, a counter-espionage agent, investigating the kidnapping and brainwashing of British scientists. The spectacled Caine represented a new kind of British hero, and the film had a great influence on the American TV show Mission: Impossible.An effective layout from Italy.

Carson McCullers (source) [Hollywood]: Columbia Pictures, 1952. With promotional text in paper snipe on back, as well as stamp of photographer Van Pelt. Near fine. Portrait of James Edwards as "Honey Brown" in this Carson McCullers adaptation, "a troubled young man happiest when away from the white world's dictates and simply playing his horn. Edwards understands jazz musicians and how their art saves their lives. He understands restraints and repressions." (Bogle, Blacks in American Films, p. 150). Edwards, despite his manifest gifts, had only a marginal film career because Hollywood was not yet ready for him.

Uli Edel directed this adaptation of Hubert Selby, Jr.'s groundbreaking cult novel Last Exit to Brooklyn about Brooklyn in the 1950s, with its sympathetic portrayal of a drag queen and plot lines involving bisexual characters. Bryant, p. 71: "Union leader Harry Black is a bisexual who has an attraction to transvestites and boys… He gets beaten to a pulp and 'crucified' when he is caught trying to pick up a young boy in a vacant lot in his neighborhood."
