Publisher's navy blue satin cloth over beveled-edge boards. Gilt stamping on spine. Five black and white facsimiles of the manuscript, including frontispiece. Five black and white portrait plates, tissue guards intact. Spine color rich with brilliant gilt stamping. Some soiling to boards. Case lightly edge worn. Tips worn and bumped. Inner hinge cracked between front free endpaper and frontispiece, else binding strong and tight. Pages lightly toned. Clean and unmarked throughout. Howes B703.

Gilt-tooled title and decorative gilt tooling on spine. Heavy rubbing to spine, spots of rubbing at corners, tips of all corner-pieces rubbed through to board. Previous owner's name written in pen on ffep. Contemporary newspaper clipping taped to ffep. Front and back hinges cracked, lower half of paste-down endpaper torn at back hinge. Pages browned. Fading and foxing evident throughout. Half-title page has been cut out. Foldout triptych at page 534 detached at fold between first and second panel. Creasing and small tears between second and third panels. "From the Earliest Time to the Present; Together with Interesting Biographical Sketches, Reminiscences, Notes, Etc."

Turn-in partially detached at foredge of front board. Binding solid. Hinges loose but secure. Damp stains to endpapers. Small blue pencil markings to front pastedown. One-inch closed tear to foredge of front pastedown with paper detached from board. Two half-inch diameter unidentifiable stamps to front free endpaper. One-inch rough diameter missing material in front free endpaper, as if a third stamp had been excised. Creasing to front free endpaper. Pages clean and unmarked with significant foxing throughout.
